With my MM, I can brake outside of the mitts. Can you do that on the drop down version? I need a solution for my cycle version.

Your hands just slide into them. The back is open. There’s no need to use the brakes from the outside. Does that answer your question?

The Bar Mitts are difficult to work if your hands are not inside them. They’re also a little more difficult to get into.

How well do the lobster gloves hold up in 0F temperatures? I may have to get a pair for this winter.

Not sure it’s ever been that cold on my commute, but I’ve used the lobster gloves all the way down to 15F (with accompanying wind chill) and been okay. Never felt I needed a more substantial solution.

I may have to give them a try. For years, I just added a pair of liners to my gloves, but the last three years age and circulation have been catching up to me. Last year, I bought rechargeable, heated ski gloves.

They are the best winter riding product I’ve ever used.

What are some recommended brands for the rechargeable heated ski gloves? While it rarely gets down to 0F here, the wind chill did get down that low a few times last winter. I generally get pretty miserable any time the temperatures get below the mid 20s. (I’m really not a cold-weather person, even though I grew up in NYS. It’s been a long time since I’ve lived up there.)

I got mine from http://http://cozywinters.com/heated-gloves.html. I’ve got the WarmGear gloves with one-butotn controls, the middle of the top row. I’m pleased with them.

Thanks. Looks like an interesting site. I may get some of the foot warmers too.

What are the key differences between Moose Mitts and Bar Mitts, if any? The price is basically the same for the mountain bike/straight bar versions. Both are one size only. It seems that there is more of a delay in receiving the Moose Mitts according to the Moose Mitts website.

Bar Mitts are sold by Griffin Cycle in Bethesda, the only DC area store to carry them. But I don’t see the Bar Mitts listed on the Griffin Cycle website.

Ordered some tonight. Keeping my fingers crossed they work well on my bike. Yuck – winter is coming!

Hmmm… these Moose Mitts look like a great alternative to my lobsta gloves, which have taken on an unfortunately lobster-esque aroma. I’ve tried washing them in everything from regular detergent to tea tree oil and the funk continues.

Sport wash helps get rid of the funk. Moose Mitts are awesome. Yesterday’s ride started in the low 30s and ended in the mid 50s. My hands were comfy all day.

Was sporting my moose mitts this morning. They are easily one of the best cold weather purchases I have. Thanks Pete for evangelizing about their awesomeness. Order them early, as this place is quite literally, a small business with about 4 people (I imagine elves) who sew these by hand. Mine were ordered right before Christmas and I got mine in early Feb.

I went to Bethesda and picked up a pair of Bar Mitts. I took Metro up there so I haven’t had a chance to try them out yet.

The Bar Mitts are made out of neoprene, the same material used for triathlon wetsuits. Should be interesting. I’m actually looking forward to testing them out. But it’ll be a while before the temperatures get really cold. My regular winter gloves were OK last year until it got down to the 20s and below.

By the way, I had another crazy driver encounter while I was walking around Bethesda. I was crossing an intersection, in the crosswalk and while I had the Walk signal. As I was more than halfway across, an oncoming car makes a hard left (his left), cutting across the other car traffic lanes to make a tight turn. Not sure why he was doing that but he headed straight for me. He came within a foot of hitting me.

What’s more, he didn’t even really stop. He veered about two inches and then kept going. Clearly he saw me and he knew that he had almost hit me, but then he immediately kept going! He was in no danger of getting struck by other car traffic. If he had stopped for a couple seconds, it would have been no problem for him. I’m not familiar with that intersection so perhaps he was making an illegal left turn and wanted to clear out before a police officer saw him. Either that or he was on drugs. The sun had set but I was wearing light-colored clothing. And since he veered slightly, I know he saw me. What an ass. And a menace.

Anyway, I think this winter will be more pleasant with the Bar Mitts. I’ll try chemical warmers for my mtn bike shoes along with my neoprene shoe covers. I think that should be OK. If not, then I’ll try the suggestion to use platform pedals over the winter and shoes/boots that don’t have holes in the bottom of them, i.e., bike shoes.

Bar mitts are awesome!!! I have a set and they’re really warm. I can’t use them when it is only a little cold out. My hands roast. :D
