ParticipantIt’s been an ongoing problem with numerous complaints. DBB had a drawn-out battle over it at one point. Some folks who DEFINITELY ARE NOT forum members seemed to have developed a habit of picking up the cones and tossing them over the jersey barriers as they rode by. The Park Service doesn’t care. They serve their purpose of preventing anyone from turning into their precious parking spots.

ParticipantWonder why the park service is so bicycle-antagonistic. I guess they just see their role as to provide commuter roads and the bicyclists can just go f themselves.

ParticipantPerhaps someone should point out to NPS that blocking the ramp also blocks wheelchair users which I’m pretty sure is not ADA compliant.

ParticipantThe cones nearest the trail off the 14th Street Bridge seem to be multiplying. They appear to be protecting parking spaces for some Park Police officers who, for reasons unclear, park there rather than near the PP offices. While I haven’t staked the location out, it seems that fellow officers shuttle the parkers to/from their duty stations.
Might be worth getting off my steed (how’s Rocinante for a potential name for a bike?) and taking another run at this windmill.
Strategies might include the ADA issue, the visual appearance, and the private parking.

ParticipantIf this is still an issue, contacting the Chief of Maintenance, Sean Kennealy, at 202-245-4685 would be the best way to be put in touch with the proper person who handles issues with the National Mall and Memorials.

ParticipantI noticed as I came through this morning that none of the cones were blocking the sidewalk ramp. They were all carefully lined up out of the way of cyclists. I’m not sure if that was due to another cyclist or the NPS, but someone somewhere paid attention.

Must be a friendly cyclists, they’re all still there.

ParticipantAs of this evening, they were positioned with the same random panache we have grown to expect.
I did speak with Mr. Kennealy (NPS) this afternoon and he indicated he would take a look.

ParticipantI presume Sean Kennealy is the guy I should write to about requesting a curb cut along Ohio Drive, SW so cyslists don’t have to salmon to get on to the sidewalk along East Basin Drive SW; that is, when heading to the George Mason Bridge from Hains Pt. Putting in a curb cut before the intersection would make such a difference!

ParticipantIf you right that letter, I would sign on as FCC Bicycle Coordinator. That whole sector from the 14th St Bridge to our building on Maine Ave is a real problem and I am slowly getting motivated to do my own efforts.

I’ll write it this weekend and let you sign on (and anyone else for that matter).
I also wish there were a way to avoid salmoning when heading south on Ohio Drive by the tidal basin and wanting to get to the GM bridge but I can see how that would require mega bucks to fix. A small curb cut coming from the other direction shouldn’t cost too much and would improve safety.

ParticipantI spoke with Mr Kennealy last week and he invited me to walk the site with him. Hope that will occur this week.
Will report the results of that meeting.
I’d think we might be able to extend the trail between East Basin Drive and the interstate on ramp about 150 feet to eliminate most of the need to salmon. That might deconflict much of the bike/ped/motorist traffic

If you get a chance, please point out the salmoning problem too.
No more cones!

ParticipantAgain, Dana, if you want warm bodies – I am glad to show up to.
The major infrastructure rehab – such as solving the salmoning problem – was the subject of a major EIS in the fall. In other words, it is in the planning phase (tho all I know is that they released the EIS for comments and many of us provided comments – dont know if anything has been done since then). The EIS covers the 14th St Bridge Cooridor from the Virginia Side and Long Branch Park – the DC side up to Maine Ave (I believe).
