I accidentally discovered this variation on the southbound route through Crystal City that was posted by Emm.

    https://goo.gl/maps/FodbDo6HyyF2

It avoids the traffic light at 27th/Potomac Ave. and Crystal Drive.

But how are you getting no to Meade? Is that just Memorial Bridge to the cemetery, to route 110 trail?

I take independence all the way down to the Lincoln memorial then over the south sidewalk of memorial bridge to the cemetery the 110 trail and up the sidewalk past the carillon and the bike share station then take the curb cut at 14th St N to get on Meade.
Meade is just recently paved now and awesome!

Basically yes. You can take the sidewalks/trail around the Iwo Jima Memorial or take the street to Wright Gate and turn right on Meade.

There has been a goose carcass on the MVT northbound lane south of the Memorial Bridge and north of the GWP crossing since yesterday morning. It appears to have moved since yesterday to be more centered in the lane (unless we have a serial goose killer around. Perhaps a buddy of the CCT Barred owl?). I have reported it to NPS.

From a recent Arlington County email bulletin:

Upcoming Paving on Columbia Pike, Four Mile Run

Crews will begin mobilizing in the next two weeks for milling and paving operations in the following areas:

Columbia Pike between Washington Boulevard and South Walter Reed Drive – Work will primarily be performed at night, between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m., to minimize traffic disruption.

Four Mile Run between South George Mason Drive and Columbia Pike – Work will take place during the day and is dependent on weather.

These sections were chosen to be repaired as part of this year’s County Paving Schedule.

So happy to see the paving on Columbia Pike which is part of my daily commute. It’s in pretty bad shape especially along the shoulder in the ride hand lanes which sometimes makes negotiating traffic a little tough.

I don’t like this route after trying it a 2nd time. The 2nd stoplight on the route is at Abindgon and Aviation Circle. There’s no sensor for a bicycle there – the cars on Abindgon on the other side of the intersection got the green light twice and my light stayed red all the time.

Back to the mulch path for me.

You can legally proceed after two cycles of not getting a green or two minutes without a green, whichever is shorter. Of course, if you don’t feel like waiting that long, then it really doesn’t matter.

Yeah, I remember reading that somewhere in these forums last week.

Unfortunately at that intersection, there are always cars waiting for the traffic light on Aviation Circle, in both directions. I had to take a best guess as to when it would be safe to ride through the intersection. I’d rather not have to make that guess again.

One section of the newly located trail on the MVT might be open this afternoon. I stopped and spoke to a contractor this morning who said they were going to be putting down temporary lane markings and hope to open the section this afternoon.

Sweet! I’m still going to ride through the airport until the other detour is gone. That one is the worst! But progress is progress I suppose. Also Casey, it was great meeting you and chatting with you a couple of Saturdays ago!

The detour on the Holmes Run Trail underneath Duke Street has been cleared. As you pass under Duke, you can admire the nicely painted beams.

Paving and restriping on Crystal Drive appears to be finished, for the most part. All the main lane markings have been re-added. There might be some arrow signs on the new two-way center turn lane that are missing. But the bike lanes have been marked again.

Kind of random, but does anyone know what is going on with the railroad tracks that cross GW Parkway between Slaters Lane and Bashford Lane? At one point it was paved over, but now it looks like something has been through to clear out the asphalt from the tracks. Whatever is going on, be careful at that crossing – lots of loose gravel and newly open ruts.
