Even more disturbing because of the location of that sidewalk, along a road named after Jefferson Davis.

A solution to both problems is…more spraypaint.

In this case, spray paint won’t work, I think. The symbol is etched into the concrete.

So it was reported to VDOT? I received a PM about reporting it to VDOT. I called the number this afternoon, but it’s a general contact number and I didn’t feel like waiting on hold for an hour, so I disconnected the call. If the issue needs to be pushed again, I’ll try their website. The recorded message at the VDOT number mentioned an online reporting form for VDOT.

I’ve never used the online form, although I did contact VDOT once, regarding the long strip of spilled concrete at S. Glebe Rd. and Potomac Ave. The concrete spilled out of a truck when Potomac Ave. was being constructed, I think. The lump is about a foot or two in length and close to the bike lane striping. It’s another area where the jurisdiction of ARL Co and VDOT intersect. I contacted both, on at least a few occasions over the years, but I think that concrete lump is still there.

Seems that when there is an issue near the intersection of ARL roads and VDOT roads, trouble tickets get lost in the system, for whatever reason. For the Potomac Ave. lump, I spoke with a VDOT employee and I sent emails to ARL Co, regarding the matter. Has anyone ridden by there recently? Is that concrete lump still there? The last time I rode by, it was there, but I haven’t been there on that side of the intersection in several weeks.

The lump was still there last week. I have to go to work tomorrow morning, so I’ll take that route on my AM commute — unless my head is too foggy to remember to go that way — and let you know. I’d be surprised if it were gone.

Rode by this morning on my way to work, and the lump is still there in all its lumpy, concrete glory.

Maybe the lump is supposed to have some significance. Like a “Welcome to Arlington, VA” sign or something. Someone is really attached to that thing to allow it to remain in place for so long.

I just received a notice from the Arlington County staff that the sidewalk on Rte. 1 is managed by the Crystal City BID. I wasn’t aware they handled sidewalks. The service request has been forwarded to them.

Wouldn’t it be easier for Arlington and VDOT to have a chart on hand that marks precisely which jurisdictions and organizations have responsibility for which roads and sidewalks in the County? I’m wondering why it took so long just for someone this out for this location. They should have a PDF or Google Map overlay available for quick reference. That information should also be incorporated into the public reporting tool so the public knows whom to contact for road and sidewalk repair requests.

I just sent a note to some of the BID staff to give them a heads up.

Maybe it’s in place of a future historical marker, since Arlington used to be the headquarters for the American Nazi Party, although the address for their headquarters seems to have been in Ballston/VA Square: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Nazi_Party

Joking aside, we’ll file that into the “history we’re not proud of” category.

Don’t forget: FCC2 meets every Friday at Java Shack. Welcome, indeed!

Maybe the BID is responsible for the concrete lump, too. ;)

Actually, I would doubt that very seriously, but maybe you could enlist them in your personal crusade to have it removed.

They had one of the now demolished houses across from the Dominion Hills shopping center where George Lincoln Rockwell was shot. I think the duplex mentioned as the subsequent headquarters is now FCCII.

Ah. In that case, the solution is…a large hammer.
