I’m planning on riding the C&O Canal back from Harpers Ferry the day after Thanksgiving. Will I be okay with knobby 700×38 cm tires?

I recently rode the last 30 miles or so (closest to DC) and had no trouble with 35 touring (non knobby) tires. But it was dry. I’d have preferred knobbier CX tires, especially had it been wet.

Sure, if it’s dry. Even if it’s wet you’ll be fine too, it’ll just be more slow going.

I’ve done DC to Harpers Ferry on 700x32s loaded, and it was fine. It was also dry, but even with some wet patches and mud, I’d say 38s will be A-OK.

I’ve done the full thing fully loaded on 700x38s twice and many subsections both loaded and unloaded over the years. My tires are more slick than knobby, so you should be fine. The only thing that might give you a challenge is if it has rained and you’ve got fenders. I did a out and back winter camping trip a few years ago and the mud kept packing between my fender and wheel, a prescription for misery. Knobbies should make dealing with mud a lot easier than my (relatively) slicks, and 38s are plenty wide.

The W&OD was blocked this morning where it goes underneath Rt. 267 for contruction (before 6 a.m.!), but then, if you go that way you already know this.

The awesome protected bike lanes on Hayes Street, northbound, have lots and lots of leaves in them. I’ll report it, but they might be slick for anyone going through today…

With the warm weather, there was an uptick in cyclists this morning, particularly of the smallest cog/low cadence persuasion, and I noticed that many did not have lights. Expect quite a few Ninjas tonight.

I rode the W&OD starting at about 1:30 pm out and back from Ohio St in Arlington to Hunter Mill Rd in Fairfax County. From Gallows Rd west there is a slushy accumulation and some starting to form east of Gallows. The East Falls Church and Broad Street wooden bridges have about and inch of slushy accumulation and are a little slick. Have fun on your rides home, and stay safe.

Given that temps will hover around freezing overnight, and that I will be leaving for work at about 8:00 tomorrow morning, I may go ahead and mount my studs…yay!

That would certainly seem prudent. Because bike stuff!

One thing I’ll ask for this coming year- The pavement for the untouched section up to S. Quincy St has degraded a bit. Time for some repair, and perhaps white edge lines to make it easier to navigate at night? (This section did not get lighting)

I have to report precipitation of the cucurbitaceae variety.

On Custis near the intersection with N Stafford there are several broken pumpkins on the trail. It seems like they were thrown from the Washington Lee parking deck.

Some are very near the path — would have been quite dangerous for anyone on the trail when they were thrown down.

I have reports on the “WODCO” trail. Started in Bethesda before sunrise, rode the C&O to White’s Ferry, crossed to VA and picked up the W&OD. Fought nasty headwinds down to the Custis, crossed the Potomac again at Key Bridge, ride the C&O to Fletchers and picked up the Capitol Crescent to Bethesda to complete the loop shortly after dusk.

Oh, yeah. The trails were fine, though lots of wet spots on the C&O.

Was that you stopped on the WOD around 2:30 next to Shreve road? I stopped to see if two riders were OK. Turns out they had been riding since dawn and were taking a break. I offered nutrition and drinks but they declined.
