ParticipantCustis was totally dry as of 745, but it was sprinkling most of the way in so that may change.

Participantanother thing to watch out for is people that have not turned off their lawn/garden sprinklers for the winter. Yesterday morning the path/sidewalk around the Key memorial pocket park ark (DC side) was full of icy patches (and the shrubbery covered by a beautiful, but probably deadly, icy glaze)

Did someone say “shrubbery”?!

ParticipantYeah, 5:15 this morning there were crunchy bits on my front steps (brick), but just damp sidewalk and street (concrete and asphalt). By the time I headed out at 7:20, we were getting some very light rain, but the bridges on the W&OD from the Custis to Glencarlyn were merely wet, no ice, as was the Roosevelt Trollheim at 8:00 am. The temperature has dropped a couple degrees this morning, but here in Rosslyn, it’s just been rain so far.

ParticipantOnly the hard-core commuters will be biking today and tomorrow.
[NOTE: I’m not one of them.]

Even if I commute by Metro, about 15 of the total 45 minutes of that trip is spent standing (waiting for the bus) and walking (from metro to office) in the rain. At that point, the 30 minute ride isn’t really any worse, and it comes with the added benefit of not having to ride WMATA.

ParticipantThe worst day on the trails beats riding WMATA any day.

So if I slide on the ice and flip over the railing on the TR Bridge, ending up in the river, it’s BETTER than metro? Hmmm…I’d say it would be about even.

Yesterday I counted just over 40 others out on bikes on my morning commute. This morning it was half that.

I went for a ride with the boyfriend earlier. It was cold and wet and kind of fun. (No wind, so yay!) His coworker told him he was pretty hard-core to be out riding in this weather. My coworker told me he is going to have me committed to a padded room somewhere.
grumble grumble unfair double standard grumble

Ever had to transfer from subway to bus at Rosslyn during a cold nasty rain, waiting for a bus that is “due” in 3 minutes. Yeah, I think falling off the TR bridge and into the river…. you would probably be warmer, dryer, and more comfortable by the end of it.
