Not the day we were planning – bowing out of BAFS 2019

Whole family was heading up the MBT, coming home from parent teacher conferences. Gremlin2’s slipped off her seat, I think her feet hit the ground, and she went over the handlebars and landed on her face. ER at Children’s has put her two front teeth back in, which I had no idea they could do. She’s maybe the toughest kid I’ve ever met, takes after her great grandmother. I’m not sure whether it’s better or worse that her hands were in the Bar Mitts so she broke her fall with her chin instead of her wrists.

Compounding the fun times – as I rushed to hop off my bike to help her, I felt like something hit the back of my leg – not confirmed yet, but they think I ruptured my Achilles.

So it looks like I’m off a bike for a while. Still happy to help with the online coordination of my team, but I’m not going to be doing any riding.

Recovery going well. Next Thursday I expect to be weight-bearing in a boot. Then another 6-8 weeks and I can walk unassisted.

Gremlin is back to soccer. She’s a little tentative but she should be fine shortly

Recovery update: I WALKED TODAY! Not very far, but this is the first time since March 8th that I’ve walked without crutches or a boot. It’s an exciting day. I’m probably 3-4 weeks out from starting to bike again.

Non-biking update: Gremlin 2 got whacked in the face with a soccer ball again. Teeth seem fine.

Not a long ride. It was tiring and my right foot is the one I push off with, so having that leg still weak from surgery and months of not being used makes it tough. But I rode a real bike outside after 96 days of not riding and it was awesome.

I rode with clipless pedals today! This was a bit of a psychological hurdle to get over. Last time I wore these shoes was the day I tore it, and I remember sitting in the ER with my shoes on for a while until the foot swelled enough to hurt and I had to take the right shoe off. And for months after the surgery, my foot was too swollen to wear the bike shoes. But today I put them back on and rode and it was fine.

Next hurdle – getting back on the fixie. It’s currently geared at 46/16, which I think is a hair aggressive for my current fitness level and leg strength.
