ParticipantThe last 2 days have really brought this into focus for me (obviously). In the parts of Arlington that I frequent, there are usually acceptable alternatives to trails. However, there is no acceptable alternative to the side paths on bridges (I won’t take the lane on Key or Memorial; though I know some will, I’m confident I’m in the majority here). I believe these are actually in DC’s jurisdiction.
So how can we lobby for clearing of the true bottlenecks to our commutes. Even clearing one bridge would be helpful, but unless it’s Key or Memorial, we’d need clearing of the MVT to get to it…

ParticipantI think the other thing the past two days snow events show is that the fiction that they can’t clear trails so cross-country skiers can use them is nonsense when what is on the trails is an inch or so of slush. This will be particularly bad for the next several days since we are going to have overnight temperatures in the low 20s which will refreeze the mess and make it especially dangerous.

ParticipantThis snow and its likely aftermath also shows the necessity of cleaning the trails immediately. I don’t know if the county did anything after the snow for the streets, but it does suggest that pretreating the trails with salt might be beneficial. It is, however, unclear that the costs of pretreating (all the salt in the streams) is worth the benefit.

Yes, Arlington has plucked the low hanging fruit…We are reaching diminishing returns for each dollar spent; such is life.

ParticipantOn the topic of road salt, areas of my hometown of Madison, WI have had less salt put on the roads to protect the lakes. The net effect is that people know how to drive on streets with hard packed snow covered with sand.

Or as the non-economists on the forum would say, he’s one of “them”

“I’m one” seems to be a pretty definitive statement for an economist!
