I’m at 2100 for the year, so maybe 2150 or 2200 by year’s end. If I can match that next year with a second child, I’ll be quite happy.

I think I finished last year with around 1580 miles. It looks like I’ll get past 2700 this year and I may shoot for 3000 next year.

Many thanks to you all for being so encouraging and helpful!

I am hoping for a big finish to get to 4000 miles for the year (up from 2500 last year). My pride for the year may be having commuted by bike 100% of the days I am in town. Not being able to predict the weather in later December, I may be forced to do something really stupid.

So far I’m at 3,547 miles YTD. Pretty average mileage for commuters in this area I believe.

I don’t have a specific mile goal, but I do have a few riding goals.
    1. Diabolical Double
    2. I want to complete Strava’s early season hill challenge
    3. NYC’s five Burroughs Challenge, more for fun, for I had such a blast with NY Century last year
    4. On a nice Saturday morning, my little girl and I complete the Arlington Loop
    5. Take the W-L club to Mount Vernon and back, and (fingers crossed) the C&O to Harper’s Ferry one way

I’m at 2736 right now for 2012, so I should hit 2800 by the end of the year. Possibly 2900 but probably not, depending mostly on borrowed bike access while visiting family for the last two weeks of the year. That’s with nothing in January or February and very little in March, so I would expect to at least hit 3000 next year, possibly 3500. My phone says I rode 659 miles in 2011, but I didn’t buy it until June, so I’d estimate about 1000 last year, with that probably pretty typical for the past couple years (though I was not keeping count until I got the handy device which does it for me). I knew I rode a lot more this year, but I’d have guessed closer to twice as much rather than 3 times as much. huh, data.

I agree with this, though, so I’m not making goals for any of those miles.

I don’t like mileage goals because they make cycling stray dangerously into “something I have to do” rather than “something I want to do”. I will keep tracking everything next year but I have no concern what my number ends up at

    My actual goals are
    1) To keep riding all through the winter.
    2) Somewhere around May-ish (or whenever it is we get reliably good daylight between at least 6am and 8pm) to make some attempts at commuting. Sticking with it is not necessarily a goal, because I’m uncertain about how safe I’ll feel on certain sections of my available routes until I actually try them out, on a bike, at the correct commuting times of day. But at least giving it a try. One way per day, doing the round trip once or twice a week. (I will have to get a LOT faster if I ever think I’ll have time to ride both ways in the same day as anything other than the occasional challenge).
    3) Get better at hills. Up them and down them. I’m a weak climber and scaredy-cat descender, so they slow me down way too much (see above about getting a LOT faster). Plus, there is this hill :mad:between my house and the shopping center which houses useful places like the Safeway, CVS, post office, ABC store, wine shop, bike shop which is a large enough hill to be a disincentive for me to bike to those places for errands (unless I’m already biking elsewhere and just stopping on the way home). It’d be nice to be strong enough at hills that I don’t mind that one so much. It has not gotten any easier in the past 1.5 years I’ve lived there and been riding on it regularly, though. (I do feel inordinately proud of myself for my ability to ride it at about 4mph when I see other people walking their bikes up.:))

Tell us more about where this hill is. It sounds like a nice KOM!

So you’re taking the word of someone who admits to being weak at hills that this is a worthy one? That seems like questionable judgment.

But if you really want to know– the hill is on Belle View Boulevard, south of Alexandria (22306) from Fort Hunt Road to Quander Road.

Don’t expect to hear back from Tim right away. He’s already on his way down there — if there wasn’t a segment there before, there will be by noon. Either way, there will be a new KOM!

Well, I decided to create a 2013 Biking Goals list but didn’t realize how much I really want to do next year. Here goes:

    Biking goals for 2013

    Quantitative

    • Keep biking average above 9 miles/day – I was able to get my average as high as 10 miles/day this year (and it has stayed around 9-10 since March) and would like to continue the trend.
    • 4000 miles for the year – I expect to hit about 3300 this year, but had some trouble with motivation that prevented me from getting more miles.
    • 100 miles in a day – It’s been my goal for the past 3 years, and I’ve only gotten as high as 83 in a day. My plan is to get a tattoo (I’ve NEVER gotten one before) on my right calf once I accomplish this.

    Qualitative

    • Bike and hike trips – I’m thinking about trips to Great Falls and smaller, more obscure places that I tend to “pass by” on biking trips. It’d be a great way to break up a long ride.
    • Traveling bike – I want to take my bike with me to other cities. I’m looking into it for a trip to NYC, as I know that BoltBus allows bikes without any extra fees (though I will need to purchase a bike bag).
    • Bicycle touring on vacations – I’d like to continue this as I’ve already rented bikes on trips to Seattle, San Francisco, and Tampa, and all were very enjoyable.
    • Dust off the mountain bike – It sits there in my apartment, unused except for the rare occurrence my road bike is getting repairs or snowfall (what’s that again?). I’d like to go mountain biking at least a few times in 2013.
    • 50 States Ride – I chickened out this year but want to be at peak fitness for it in 2013.
    • Try out CaBi – I’m a one-bike kind of guy, and using another bike is like having to wear a different pair of jeans (I work so hard to break mine in and get everything nice and comfy). I’ll try it out so I can recommend it to friends when they visit.
    • Explore more of MD trails – Four Mile Run, W&OD, Custis, Mount Vernon, rinse, wash, and repeat. I need to enjoy some of the MD trails, especially the ones with the crazy multi-colored lines on them!
    • ABAC – I want to attend more meetings and get more involved than just being on this forum (although I will say that this forum gets a lot done, especially in road/trail conditions and traffic issues, than most on the internet).

Dare to Dream ($$$ needed, plus I don’t own a car)

    • Bike Shenandoah National Park – This would involve carrying a tent and other supplies, as it would be a multi-day trip to cover the entire park North to South and back.
    • Bicycle tour in Europe (or other continent) – I would choose the Czech Republic due to my ancestry, but a bicycle tour of any country really appeals to me. Someday I would like to do this.

The list could continue, but that’s a good cut-off point for now, I guess.

That is indeed a doozy of a hill. It’s steep enough to be a lung buster, but long enough to bust your legs too. I’ve only done it a couple of times and I did not have panniers full of groceries at the time. I’d have to think about quitting drinking milk and other liquids if I had to carry groceries up that every day. No more things in glass bottles either! There is a liquor store in that complex too though so somehow I’d have to find the strength to get my bottle of single malt scotch home on occasion.

It looks like there’s three segments on the hill already, all slightly different lengths.

The last few years I averaged about 300 miles a year….this year my goal was 1000 (which I will hit with my next ride this week)
Seeing as how, in my work commute alone I have the potential just over 3700 miles, I don’t think 3000 miles is a bad goal…I more than tripled my typical riding this past year, even though I was down for the count with a knee injury the first few months, and I spent a month driving because of a change in job sites…so yeah….. 3000 in 2013. :)
