To avoid long lines and backups at the gates, visitors not affiliated with the DoD have the opportunity to register and be vetted for an Automated Installation Entry (AIE) pass. To register for an AIE Pass, a JBM-HH access request form must be filled out and dropped off in person at the Visitor Control Center (VCC) at Fort Myer’s MP Station, Bldg. 415, between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Beginning Saturday, March 14, the VCC will open with minimum staffing from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Saturdays and Sundays. Beginning March 16, the VCC will continue to open Monday through Friday beginning at 8 a.m., but its hours will be extended until 7 p.m., with minimum staffing from 3:30 to 7 p.m.

Do I sniff a Catch-22? How can one drop off an access request form in person if you cannot get on the base without one?

I’m wondering if we organized a ride for one Saturday morning and brought them a whole bunch of these to process. And then two months later did it again. And again. Would they get tired? (Or would we get tired first?)

You wouldn’t even have to go back to pick up your pass if you didn’t want. We could just drop off the forms in person and let them do the paperwork.

I could deal with getting a pass twice a year, but six times a year if you want year round access?! That seems a little insane especially when you consider how dangerous Columbia Pike is to get from PC to S Courthouse Rd. Grrrrrrr

I just looked at the form. Appendix C (for their use only) shows “Type of Pass Issued”
    There are 4 check boxes:
    __24 Hour Visitor Pass
    __30 Day Visitor Pass
    __6 month Visitor Card
    __1 Year Visitor Card

So there is not even an option for 60 days on the official form.

As a government employee who deals with this type of bureaucracy as a routine part of my job, I’m confident that you will get tired first. It would be like trying to raise the water level by throwing pebbles into the ocean.

at least with the pebbles you’ll eventually reach your desired objective

As of today, FPCON raised to BRAVO.

Expect further increased difficulty accessing Fort Myer, Belvoir, etc.

    Update: AIE system upgrades ongoing
The Automated Installation Entry (AIE) system that helps monitor access to Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, is being upgraded on the Fort Myer portion of the joint base for about two weeks through Friday, May 22.
During this period, the Visitor Control Center (VCC) staff in Building 415, Fort Myer, will issue temporary AIE passes to non-DoD-affiliated personnel. These temporary passes will expire July 1. Projected time for issuance of regular AIE ID cards is mid-June.
For non-DoD-affiliated visitors: If you have already submitted a packet requesting an AIE ID card and you were notified of your eligibility for an AIE pass, you can pick up a temporary AIE pass at the Visitor Control Center. To do so, call 703-696-8968 or 703-588-2803.
For DoD ID card holders: With the upgrades to the new access system, pre-registration of DoD ID card holders is no longer required. They will be automatically registered in the AIE system when DoD ID card holders use the upgraded AIE system for the first time. The transition to the upgraded access system will be transparent for those who access the joint base. Watch for updates to this schedule.
For more information, call 703-696-8968 or 703-588-2803.

This morning, I was passing through Hatfield gate with my federal ID, and a non-fed bicyclist was allowed to pass through by showing a drivers’ license. The guards did not direct him to apply for the AIE card either.
    Change in policy?

Thanks for the update. Any chance you could take a picture of the sign and post? Thanks

I think they might shoot me if I start taking pictures- it is right by the guard booth.

    You made the right call:

Anyone with a DoD badge that knows you can sponsor you for your AIE pass (which gets you a pass good for a year instead of 60 days) It’s NOT limited to folks at the Fort, etc.

    Hi Chris,

I wonder do you know if Civilian DoD badge holders can sponsor non-DoD affiliates for an AIE pass or only active duty military?

    Cheers

I found the answer to my question, on the application form in the sponsor section it says “Active Duty or Civilian DoD Employees” so looks like I need to buy my friends a beer :-)

I was able to bike thru the Ft today without any hassle while using my government PIV card (standard ID card for all non-defense federal employees). I never would have known about the policy change unless I had read about it here since the guards looked at my card and just waved me through. :)

I can confirm that any Fed PIV card will work – good smattering of my friends at other agencies have been able to work the gate mojo.
