Some of you may have noticed the new trail counter on the ramp up to the 14th Street Bridge. It went in about 10 days ago and the folks at Arlington County shared the preliminary results with me.
There’s a new one on the ramp to the Teddy Roosevelt Bridge too (or is this that one?). Do you have that data?

ParticipantI had noticed it and kept meaning to mention it here.
I’m glad it’s there and providing data!

No, there’s one on the ramp up to the 14th St Bridge, too.

I understand they are still working on that one.

ParticipantHow about a counter for the Memorial Bridge? Or Columbia Island?

Memorial Bridge is likely has the lowest numbers (of the three) for bike crossings because getting to the Virginia side (actually the DC side closest to Virginia) is way too exciting for most cyclists. Arlington currently counts at the bridge across the GWMP to the Roosevelt Island parking lot, the Crystal City Connector and the MVT by the DCA south parking. That would count almost any cyclist getting onto Columbia Island.
With the TR and 14th Street Bridge counters installed, the ways onto Columbia Island without getting counted would be from Memorial Bridge, down the hill to Memorial Ave (leading towards the Memorial Bridge), and across the wooden bridge from Boundary Channel Drive through the LBJ Grove. While all of those routes might cause some shrinkage in the actual rider numbers, I’d expect they would be relatively small.
Getting counters on the bridges is a really big deal. This will not only help us get the NPS more engaged on the Virginia side, but also on the DC side. To quote David Patton (Arlington County), “What gets counted, counts.”

ParticipantYou miss the Washington Blvd trail. What are those rubber things crossing the sidewalk on the western side of the south sidewalk of Memorial Bridge?

Counters. Temporary though, not permanent.

ParticipantAlso, Columbia island and the whole of the memorial bridge are in dc. Virginia doesn’t start until you cross that other bridge to get to the ANC Metro. Not to say that NPS or DC couldn’t put in permanent counters but…
