ParticipantI believe Mr. Blacknell topped 50mph going down Mt. Weather this weekend!

ParticipantMy GPS told me I hit 58mph in Rock Creek Park the other day. I think it was uphill. GPS never lies, right?

Yeah really… were you on the trail?
One of my favorite places to break the 40mph barrier is on River Road heading east between Seneca and Potomac. There are 2 really good hills there which, if the conditions are right I can get up to ~41.5 mph.

I think he’s referring to the double hill just after Glebe Road when you are coming inbound.
I would suggest ballast — some bricks in your backpack or panniers.

ParticipantBunch of rookies I’ll tell ya. GPS doesn’t lie. Mach 3 on a bike :
Max Speed: 2,401.5 mph
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/52498466
And don’t ask me how the heck I did it !
But all seriousness, 40mph is possible on Wilson Blvd coming down the hill from 15th St. Pretty desolate about 3am

But only for a fraction of a second.

I’ve run faster than 100 mph according to the GPS on my smartphone. Funny though. I’ve never been able to match that speed when using my Garmin.

Going over the hill on the Custis just before the W&L parking deck i popped it into high gear and peddled for all I was worth.
35.1 MPH
I really want to break 40 now, but just going from 34 to 35 was a challenge.
Congrats, that is a feat to hit that type of speed on a trail. I’m sure it was as safe as it could be. That is a very respectable top speed, under “normal” conditions.
I have long wondered what the top speed of the common road bike was in this area…but I did not want to ask. lol I managed a speed within a few 10ths of a mph out in Middleburg Va once but try as I might I could not get any higher. I started to wonder how much it was going to cost to break 40. Seems like the wind resistance wall is right around that speed.

Thats the spot, the 2nd hill. I carry my own ballast thankyouverymuch.

ParticipantIt’s possible to safely aim for a high speed on that short section of the Custis, and there’s no side-entry possibilities, and the upturn of the hill will quickly slow you. That said, top speed efforts are generally best left to the roads. Military Road, just north of there, is a good place for that – smooth asphalt, good sight lines, etc.
And yep, hit 51mph coming down Mt. Weather last weekend. We’ll not discuss my speed going up it.

I always make sure the way is clear on the top of the second hill or else I abort my speed attempt.

When the temperature gets below freezing, my computer goes blank except for a tiny little word at the bottom that says “sick” in those little LCD reverse characters. Cateye engineers having fun I guess.
