I can’t find any reference to such a rule and, frankly, it sounds like total BS* and the type of “rule” that security or police officers will pull out of their ass. That’s not to say that you should’ve challenged the officers or whatever, but it may be worth contacting WMATA to clarify.

Due to recent events, several metro stations have set up random bag search points prior to the ticket area. I was at WFC metro this morning and was randomly selected. I had my folding bike with me and although I was allowed to keep my multi-tool, my CO2 cartridges were confiscated. I would recommend that if you DON’T want a pat down, keep your mouth shut and don’t ask questions. Please be aware and allow yourself more time. Were you inside or outside the system at the time? Sounds like you were outside.

If outside, I might have tried to find a place to stash them for the return. In fact, if outside, I don’t believe they have the right to confiscate anything, since you could choose to not enter the system and leave instead. They have no authority over that.

If inside, I would have requested that they be held at the station manager’s kiosk for pickup when you come back.

And just try to find a list of “prohibited” items on the WMATA website.
