I signed up early. Registration was supposed to open at 12 noon but the entry page went online a couple hours before that. They sent out emails announcing the early registration. Sneaky.
They said that they would give out Headsweats hats to the first 500 people who registered. I’m pretty sure I got one of the hats. I’m also hoping that I finally have a relatively low bib number in a race, not 2485 or 9821 or higher. Not that the number means anything by itself, but it would be cool to get number 1. (They probably reserved that for one of the professional athletes.)
If this race is organized well, I may never return to Eagleman. I tried out that race a couple years ago. Didn’t go so well. My goggles were messed up before the race even started. I literally couldn’t see anything, even two feet in front of me, while on land. When I got in the water, I had no idea where the buoys were. I later found out that either the current was unusually strong (which didn’t seem to be the case) or the swim course was very long (with even the pros having slow times that day). I zig-zagged all over the course and ended up missing the swim cutoff time by about 90 seconds. But they didn’t tell me I was DQ’d until AFTER I finished the entire 56-mile bike. So I ended up with a very nasty sunburn on my lower back (looked like someone branded me with a hot poker) only to find out that my race didn’t count.
Eagleman has also been known to have jellyfish issues. I don’t think that’s a problem in the immediate D.C. area. We’re too far inland.
