Was crossing said death trap this morning and notice some surveyor markers marking the rough outline for the new path. The only downside is that it looks like the new path with run smack into not only the oncoming sidewalk bridge traffic but also the merging sidewalk traffic circle traffic. SHOULD BE FUN!

Only a 10-20% chance of rain each day until next Tuesday.

(However, that’s what Weather.com said about this evening, and then the skies opened up with a heavy downpour.)

An update from the NPS on the GWMP Facebook page:

“More safety improvements are coming to the Mt Vernon Trail: workers will realign the VA-27 crosswalk (near Memorial Bridge). Watch for detours from 8:30am to 3pm on 8/29 and 8/30.”

Dana, was this the one you had requested be moved a little for better line of sight? Did they take your recommendation?

It seems to be. These were taken yesterday (Thursday) afternoon. I think this will be a great improvement.

This is a shot looking downstream across Washington Blvd showing the new, much improved alignment, with the crossing about 100 feet north of the existing crosswalk.

The plan seems to be to choke the traffic down to one lane so the driver that stops for cyclists/peds also provides a safety barrier (and we have oft claimed cars have no uses).

The curb cuts have been installed and the new trail awaits asphalt. For the record, it took great self restraint to not carve DaveK’s and Mark Blacknell’s initials into the concrete. :)

    The work progresses!

The effort should cut along the painted line to ensure a safe transition. Not sure how the weather from Isaac will affect the paving next week but please be aware and cautious.

Thanks to the NPS for this effort.
