ParticipantBooo… having a bike stolen really sucks, but having an orange bike stolen is even worse!
Whatever you get, make sure you replace it with another orange bike
lol I swear didn’t read Liz’s comment when I wrote this…

ParticipantThe pumpkin Vaya was stolen? Where? Sheesh, that sucks.
I really like my Handsome Devil. It’s a 700c copy of a Bridgestone XO-1. It can fit 47mm wide rubber and has semi-horizontal drop outs, tig welded frame. They did a great job putting it together. Compared to a LHT it’s more of a sport touring geometry with shorter chainstays and a more lively front end. It’s also available as a frameset.

You’ve got to stop posting photos of Renovos, it’s taking too much effort to dry out my keyboard! By the way, does the sailboat in the background come with the bike for that second mortgage?
:p

ParticipantAnyone recommend a good Surly shop? I made a deal with the replicant: forgo the drivers license (and associated drivers insurance expense) and I would buy him a bike. He may actually take me up on this. He is riding an old Motobecane road bike. Got these cute old fash gear levers on the head tube. Even he has gotten to the point he cant stand it – and it is too small for him. He wants a road bike with drops (none of this flat bar hybrid crap that dad has). Recommendations?

Based on the original purpose of this thread, whatever you get him, make sure you get him a good lock, or three or

The Bike Lane usually has some Surleys in stock. LHTs (and Krampuses!) in the Springfield store, and I think the Reston selection is larger overall. Bikenetic in Falls Church may have one in the store, and they’d also probably order you one with no obligation.

ParticipantIf you’re looking for something different, what about a bamboo frame? I’ve never tried them out myself, but I’m intrigued by the idea.

And if you want to build your own bamboo bike as part of a bike-building class:

ParticipantIt’s worth going to talk to Jan at Bikenetics. He is a walking encyclopedia of commuters.

To echo what others have said, Spokes, Bikenetic, BicycleSpace, and maybe a few others have Surlys. My only recommendation, if he plans to test ride, is to call around quite a bit that week. While these folks all sell Surly, they usually don’t stock them, or only stock a few bikes. I think Spokes stocks more of them, but my guess is Bikenetic would be very accomodating in getting one in for a test ride.

Not sure where you are located but the Bike Lane also carries Surly. I bought my Disc Trucker there a few months ago and love the bike.
EDIT: I test rode both the Trucker and the CC before deciding on what I wanted (as well as the fit), the shop in Springfield had no issues letting me zip around the lot…did the same at Spokes in Fairfax)

I got my Surly at Bicycle Space. I bought the frame through them, then had them build it up from a mixture of new and old components. The short, perky mechanic there (I don’t know her name, Kate maybe?) was great. She was really patient while I decided what I wanted and she really knew her stuff when I had no idea what I wanted. Anyway, the drawback is they don’t have any sort of fitting capabilities. Not even a trainer to do a basic shop fitting.

ParticipantBasically, almost any bike shop will be able to order Surly bikes and parts for you. They’re distributed by QBP, a huge (and excellent!) distributor that serves pretty much every independent shop in some way, and some chains too I think: http://qbp.com/#brands
