I’m extremely pleased to see, particularly as a soon-to-be ArlCo resident, that the county seems to have adopted traffic calming as a policy goal and touting that as an added benefit to bike lanes. I hope it gets in front of the argument that cyclists are some privileged lobby and the county is installing bike lanes to appease us…when really, it’s part of a broader strategy of making the roads safer for EVERYONE.

Hot on the heels of the Green Bike Lanes installation is a “Buffered Bike Lane” being installed between Clarendon and Courthouse.

I’m a bit confused here. The link shows two different types of buffers: 1) buffer between the bike lane and parking lane and 2) buffer between the bike lane and traffic.

In the picture, I get that the buffer is of the 2nd type, but are they only going to use that type?

I’m also trying to figure out which type would be safer since vehicles regularly “park” in the bike lane along Clarendon Blvd (yes, I know it’s technically “standing,” but when a car is sitting there with its engine off I call it parking). At least the 1st type (buffer between bike lane and parking lane) would help prevent dooring.

    From those in the know,

“In this installation there will be a different treatment on both sides of the bike lane – between the parking lane and the bike lane there will be lines encouraging cyclists to ride further away from parked cars (you can see these laid out in the photo) and there will be a buffer between the right travel lane and the bike lane.”
