Are those dynamo hub lights bright enough to be a “see in the dark” light versus a “be seen” kind of light? It seems to be to be the later from what I can tell on my wife’s new bike.
Agree with mstone. Definitely bright enough to see by. My B&M Cyo was brighter than the Magicshine-style light I have now and had a much wider and more useful beam pattern… and the vertical cutoff is very nice especially when trail riding. No need to cover your light with your hand if properly aimed. I think some of the bad rap goes back to older bulb technology, but like with battery-powered bike lights, the advent of improved LED technology has made for much more efficient and effective lighting.
For a comparison of the beams that some these lights put out, check out this useful comparison. As you’ll see, some of the cheaper and/or older lights put out a lot less light than the newer and/or more expensive (and expensive doesn’t have to mean hundreds of $$$. The light I had now retails for $70.
