ParticipantI bought Bar Mitts last winter. They worked pretty well. A weak link was the metal brake handles, which transmitted the cold into the Bar Mitts and onto my hands. But I improvised an easy and cheap solution. I bought one of those floating neoprene key chains. I cut it up into small sections and fit them onto the brake levers. I managed to cover up most of the bare metal. It also makes it more comfortable to use the brakes, so I left the neoprene covers on the levers over the summer.
Back to the Bar Mitts, there’s a small bike shop, Griffin Cycle, in Bethesda that sells them. Or at least they did last winter. I wanted to look at them in person instead of ordering them online without getting a chance to see what they are really like.

ParticipantFor the brake levers, I take a small section of road bike tube and zip tie it to the levers. If you have fancypants integrated shift/brake levers for road bikes, that won’t work. Good reason to go fixie when the temps drop.

ParticipantI forgot to mention that I put the Bar Mitts (and improvised neoprene brake covers) on my mountain bike, not my tri bike. I never ride the tri bike over the winter.
Once the weather gets cooler and the roads get nasty from all the sand, salt and de-icing chemicals, I stick to the mountain bike or Capital Bikeshare. Or indoor spin bikes. I also saw that the gym now has a mountain-bike-type machine. The handlebars are similiar to mountain bike bars. The bars turn from side to side. There’s a video screen with simulated courses. You can race against someone else on an adjacent machine. The pedals have toe cages, safe enough for indoor riding. I may have to try it out over the winter, to pep up my winter riding.

ParticipantJust FYI we added a second machine and an extra person this fall…which means for the first time ever we are caught up…Whoo Hoo. We’ll keep busting but to stay ahead of the curve this year. The Road versions are a little behind yet, but hope to be caught up by end of week as well.
Jsut posting the updated info. Expect 1 week for delivery at this time…which may change when holiday shopping begins 😮

ParticipantMy Moose Mitts for the road bike arrived while I was away. Will figure out how to install them this weekend. It will also be time to get the winter bike set up with it’s Schwalbe Marathon Winter studded tires and BarMitts (no, I’m not being compensated for these commercial plugs).
