After the devastating earthquake in Nepal (with at least 7,000 dead), many roads were blocked and villages were cut off from supply networks. Nepal’s national mountain biking team teamed up with Himalayan Single Track, a company that organizes extreme mountain biking tours in Nepal, to create Nepal Cyclists Ride to Rescue. The riders on the team are very familiar with the mountainous terrain. They can reach villages that others can’t. They are delivering supplies and searching for other survivors who may need help. Trucks bring the supplies as far as they can, but the cyclists cover the “last mile” (which in some cases could be as long as dozens of miles). The cyclists also plan to rebuild houses and a school after the immediate recovery needs are met.
Portal Bikes, a cargo bike manufacturer, has teamed up with Epic Mountain Bike to organize another group of 30 mountain bikers who are also distributing food and medical supplies by bike.
Most of the bikers are Nepalese but some tourists who had booked trips through Epic Mountain Bike have also been assisting in the relief efforts.
Nice story in the face of all that devastation and tragedy.
