A question for next year: Should we leave the sign-up form up indefinitely so that there will be spares for people who get sick or injured? It would be easy enough to leave the form up. However, I can see some issues with replacements.
First, what constitutes an injury? My first year, one of the highest scorers in Freezing Saddles broke his clavicle, but continued to be a high scorer. Are we looking only at people who can’t bike any more miles, or people whose miles are substantially diminished, or what?
Second, who gets picked as a replacement? Is it first come first served, do we try to find someone with a similar ride profile, or what?
Third, what do we mean by a substitute? Do we eliminate the injured person’s miles back to the beginning? If not, do we have to find some way to exclude the replacement person’s miles from before the injured person dropped out? Note that in general, we have counted all miles back to the beginning, no matter when someone gets added, but this seems like an unfair advantage if the injured person’s miles are also being counted for the first part of the competition.
I think these all have fairly straightforward solutions.
1. Someone who can’t bike any more, or are quitting out of their own volition. So – very different from someone crashing and riding on. I think in our two cases the riders have asked to be replaced if possible, as they will not be riding. It doesn’t even have to be an injury really. If there’s some life event, etc. that takes someone out before they’ve really had any chance to contribute it’s almost the same as them not being on the team.
2. Someone with a similar ride profile, if possible.
3. Yes, their points are removed, and the replacement person’s miles from the start count. It would be needlessly complicating to ask hozn to build something to handle anything else. I do think it has to happen early enough in the competition to warrant replacement. So admittedly there is some ambiguity here, but in our case the two riders have a combined 110 points.
For next year, I guess yeah you could leave team assignments open for potential replacements.
