Need Route Advice to Lucketts, VA

Hello —

I was thinking of riding out to the Lucketts Community Center for the Lucketts Fair on Sunday, making a 70-ish mile round trip from where I start. Lucketts is on Route 15, just a few miles south of Point of Rocks.

I’m fully aware that Google Maps bike directions are a BAD idea (taking Route 15 from the W&OD up to Lucketts).

I was thinking of continuing on the W&OD further west to Clarks Gap, take Clarks Gap Road north, continuing on Loyalty Road, then Stumptown Road to Lucketts.

Would this be doable on a road bike? Advisable? Thanks in advance.

That’s exactly what I’d recommend. I’ve ridden Clark’s gap/loyalty many, many times, and it’s very nice on the bike.

I’ve ridden that way many times. It’s a beautiful route. A little hilly/rolly, but not too bad.

Please stay off Rt 15. The only part I’ll ride is from Leesburg out to Whites Ferry.

Unfortunately, change in plans . . . my son wants to go with me, which means I have to drive. Please let me know how you find the backroads out there. I have some use or lose leave to use up before the end of year rush. Maybe I can get out there one of these days.

For future reference: What jabberwocky said. Reston Century uses this route (2-3 years ago, the same direction) on their northern loop. The pavement on Loyalty has been good as far as Stumptown (it has been a mess further north to Taylorstown) , and Stumptown was repaved a few years ago to repair the construction vehicle damage on the west side of the crest. Watch speed descending – it’s a little narrower and twistier on the east side. Then a nice flat run-out to Lucketts. Except for possibly a water fountain in the rear of the Waterford Elementry School, there are no services between the convenience store @ Rt 9/Clarke’s Gap Rd and Lucketts. Rt 15 as JimF said is unrideable north of the White’s Ferry turnoff, unless you have a blocking escort of very large trucks fore and aft. Maybe not even then.

Hey Will. Depending on what my schedule is, I may join you for something like this. Saturday is my big ride day this weekend, but there’s a chance I may get to ride Sunday too.

Oh, that was last weekend – I can’t this coming Sunday! I did my W&OD ride (and ended up running into Liz anyway).

But I think I shall be seeing you this Saturday anyway.
