From the W&OD, turn onto West St in Falls Church. It becomes Williamsburg St. Follow it left to stay on Williamsburg at the light at Roosevelt (at the shopping center), and follow it left again a little ways down to get on Glebe. Follow Glebe downhill to Chain Bridge.

You may want to avoid part of Glebe by using Old Glebe Road and getting back on Glebe at Military.

Are you going north on the towpath or going up the Capital Crescent Trail? If the later, you may (or may not) wish to hike the path up from Canal Road on the other side of Chain Bridge.

Depending on where you are on the W&OD, another option is to get onto the Custis and then do Spout Run –> Lorcom–>Military Road–>Glebe–>Chain Bridge (you can take 41st if Glebe isn’t your cup of tea)

Once on the other side -as Dismal points out – you have a couple of options depending on your route. To get to the CCT, you can a) cross the entire bridge, hop over the low jersey barrier, cross the Parkway, and hike up the portage or b) take the ramp before the end of the bridge down to the towpath and take a right at the bottom (heading toward DC), ride for about 300-400 yards under the old rail bridge, then hike up the side to the CCT.

Why wouldn’t you take Custis –> Quincy (which becomes Military in about 4 blocks, and has a bike lane) –> L to stay on Military –> Glebe –> Chain Bridge

Doesn’t that take you through that awful Lee Hwy/Old Dominion intersection?

Not to mention adds about 4 miles to the map I posted above.

Yes, but going straight isn’t bad. If you really hate it, you can turn right on 20th, wave at my family, left on Pollard, then left on Lee and right on Military.

I was asking Bilsko about his route. His point was that if you’re at a different point on W&OD, Custis may be better. I know it doesn’t apply to eminva, but I’ve seen other people take Lorcom from the Custis when they could have just taken Quincy, and it’s a big detour.

Williamsburg route makes sense, but it’s torn to sh#t for utility work right now.

A feature, not a bug, as this is in keeping with the Forum preference of extended commutes.

Instead take Little Falls from Sycamore to Glebe.

I go down 41st St…. walk my bike down. Glebe down to Chain Bridge is a tight S turn with no shoulders; there are car accidents there ALL the time. There is also a spring that weeps onto the road there, so the surface is always slick. Play it safe; walk down 41st which is the bike route.

Thank you very much for all your helpful suggestions!

It is with no small amount of regret that I have since learned my wheel won’t be fixed until Saturday, so if I do this, it would have to be on my husband’s mountain bike (the only other bike in the house with a rack, and I have to bring a ton of stuff). Not relishing the prospect of a 50+ mile round trip on the bike affectionately called “the blue beast.”

So thanks either way and sorry for putting you to the trouble — if not this time, there will be another.

    Liz

P.S. In answer to some questions, I was not planning to go to the CCT on the other side — I’m told I have to get to Macarthur and then Seven Locks. My colleague gave me directions for how to do that.

Just abscond with his rack and put it on your BRAND NEW mountain bike. Or stop at Bikenetic on the way home today and get a shiny new rack.
