Don’t forget that you will need more space at the end of the shoe than your non-biking shoes since your feet will be sliding forward when riding (and presumably will swell up during long rides). I always buy a 1/2 size up.
As a woman, I have less options so I simply buy mountain biking shoes so I can walk in them easily plus I like the extra grippiness I get when I have to walk the bike through muck or up/down some of the access trails around here. My latest pair claims to be a 7 on the stiffness scale.
