ParticipantHere you go. The crash is at the end. In this case, I’m happy to be an Arlington rider instead DC.
Running of multiple red lights, you name it.

ParticipantThat video, on so many levels, is tough to watch.

ParticipantWas this the NBC4 story? http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/DC-Bike-Party-Ends-in-Crash-211921711.html
DCist had an article on it yesterday; I’m guessing since it showed people engaging in illegal behavior that endangered others (in addition to themselves), the moron who posted it decided it wasn’t so funny after all, especially after it made the jump from local blogs to evening news. The organizers of Bike Party are really upset. They said that group was riding ahead of the organized ride, and ignored requests to stay to the right and stop at lights.

ParticipantI saw the video yesterday. Probably the most deserved car-ramming-a-cyclist ever. Hope the taxi wasn’t too screwed up.

ParticipantI usually don’t fully agree with people who say one bad cyclist brings the ire of angry drivers down on all cyclists, but unfortunately I think videos like this certainly could. It’s the perfect example of us behaving badly. I didn’t get to watch it before it went private, but it’s pretty easy to guess what happened from comments above.

It was 15 minutes of fixie hipsters cruising around, running lights, threading between pedestrians and being all-around douchecopters. Towards the end, one of them cruises through a red light without really paying attention and gets nailed by a cab going 35+mph.

ParticipantI take it DC Bike Party told the user to take it down. Have no idea why he posted it in the first place.

ParticipantI watched it knowing that someone got nailed by a cab at some point, but not knowing when. The nailing was at the very end, which means I watched the whole 5 (?) minutes of hipster fixie horribleness. The way they were riding, there could have been a collision at any intersection. I actually missed the cab-nailing, because it hit the guy head-on, and he ended up on the hood. At first, it just looked like he had ridden past before the cab when through the intersection. On second look, not so much.
He’s really lucky to be alive. They all are. Really idiotic to ride like that. And them to film it. And then to put it on the web. Darwin awards indeed.

ParticipantIf you run a red light at full speed crossing 14th St NW you’re going to get what’s coming to you. Zero sympathy.

ParticipantI’ve done a couple social rides in DC and there always seems to be a few people like this that show up, so I now pretty much refuse to do these types of rides. Despite the reputation ELITE riders get, I find the shop rides to be much more well-behaved. Sure, there are some idiots who can’t hold their line or whatever, but I’m not constantly cringing while thinking “this is why drivers hate cyclists”, like is the case on the social rides. I’m sure I’ll get there, but my feelings about shop rides are still positive at this point..

You needn’t look any further than this video: http://vimeo.com/68553547
In all seriousness though, it has to be the hard thing about organizing any of the larger social rides. It’s just tough to control. Any some folks tend to act out a little when in a large group that makes them feel safe/invincible (especially when as bike riders we often don’t get to feel that way). It really highlights the shame of not having Bike DC this year, or other similar type event. A regular open streets type of event would be a nice venue for controlled social/fun rides.

ParticipantThe unfortunate thing is that no matter what the activity, there is always going to be some singular or plural jackasses who are too cool for everyone else and end up spoiling it by doing something like this. Too cool, too ELITE, too whatever. This idiot probably never played Frogger, but he certainly knows what the game is about now!
And yes, this makes all cyclists look bad… and I have said before: the group of people on this forum are the positive representatives and we are in the minority out there when it comes to community, positive attitude, and respecting the road.

D-bags are cowards who can’t handle being called out on their D-baggery?

ParticipantHow big of a D-bag do you have to be to have the cycling community say “meh, he deserved it” when getting hit?
