ParticipantLooks like they announced the end of the contest early. This is the official message posted around 12 noon today:
“NBC ENDS WITH 12 MILLION MILES!!
12 million total miles were achieved on the final day of the 2012 National Bike Challenge. What an exciting way to end what has been a great effort by a community of over 30,000″And that wraps up my participation on Endomondo for the year. Interesting challenge, but I didn’t like having to log in each day to post my rides and workouts.

I cannot believe how close the Bike Arlington A and B teams are. It comes down to the wire!

In the end it looks like about 500 points was the difference. Great job by all 3 teams! It was cool to see sooooo many DC area riders so high up in the standings. 4 in the top 100 overall is amazing and some of us just outside the top 100.
Great riding y’all!
Pete
PS: I’m soooooo glad I don’t have to enter miles on Endomondo anymore.

ParticipantAnd here are the data.
Of note is that the top 10 riders (based on points) are from all three teams (3 A, 4 B, 3 C). This was a real grass roots effort with no real attempt to make an all-star team.
Based on the national ranking, here are the points for the riders on all three teams

Great job everybody! To quote that noted cycling philosopher, Dirt, “Y’all Rock!”

ParticipantWow, I am also glad I don’t have to log on Endomondo anymore. Actually I’m glad I don’t have to get on a bike today at all.
I’m happy to report that two women ended up in the top 20 of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria community leaderboard, including one in the Top 10! So the guys didn’t totally dominate.
I don’t know if RCannon will do a final version of his consolidated regional leaderboard, but I think my workplace based team acquitted itself well, considering we didn’t really have an organized company peloton before the contest started. But we do now, which is a great thing.
On a sad note, it appears that no one I know won a bike trip or bike. Oh well.

ParticipantA couple other NoVa teams:
Crystal City #485
NOVA-CBG (Northern Virginia-Casual Bicycling Group) #1232September 1, 2012 at 11:27 am #950223dbb
ParticipantJust looked at the NBC website to see the prize winners

Looks like our very own Tim Kelley scored a water bottle!

ParticipantSuperman won a Specialized hat. And someone from Virginia took home one of the Platinum-level prizes. Don’t know if he’s from Northern Virginia or not.
The Greenlight Ride contest from 2010 had much better odds. I don’t think there were nearly as many people participating, even though it was a national contest. It was run in conjunction with that year’s Tour de France, though unofficially. There were only three people on my team (not counting two who didn’t post many miles) and all of us won something. I won a (non-GPS) bike computer. Another person won a Genesis bike helmet. And the third person won a Salsa bike! The contest was free, just like this one was. It only lasted for one year. Unfortunately, they never ran another contest with so many prizes. All of their other challenges are for bragging rights only.

ParticipantCongratulations, everyone! This was a lot of fun!
The big challenge for me was finding bikes to ride while out of town. It required a little creative thinking sometimes, but resulted in meeting some really cool people among hotel staff and finding out how truly generous people who work at hotels are in sharing their rides and tips for local cycling. I got a chance to ride different bikes and to see some beautiful neighborhoods I wouldn’t have seen otherwise. My co-workers were amused that I was soon on a first name basis with much of the hotel staff and getting warm greetings and great service from everyone. That reminds me – I need to write some nice letters to hotel management about these people.

ParticipantIf I’m reading the FAQ correctly, I should get a plaque for first place, State of Maryland.
I really wanted the toilet paper. :p

ParticipantI missed points on seven days while I traveling out of the country, probably would have finished with 300 to 400 more points based on my usual riding pattern. Still, all in all, I enjoyed the challenge, but didn’t ride any more than I would have anyway.

Next year you can try a little harder, but you’ll still finish behind me.

ParticipantThat’s not a very sporting comment.

ParticipantCongrats consularrider for finishing top fifty nationally, second State of Virginia! Congrats Greenbelt for third State of Maryland! Congrats Dirt for 4th, State of Virginia! Dirt, your early lead in State of Virginia and DC community seemed insurmountable. I’m sure you would have finished a lot higher if circumstances were different.
I found this website when I Googled your team name. So we have the National Bike Challenge to thank for my presence here.
Unlike consular, I did ride a lot more than I would have anyway. Towards the end, mostly just to pass him on the DC community leaderboard. :p
On the last day of August, the last day of the challenge, I got banned from the forums of the website that I was riding for. I have absolutely no idea what I wrote to cause that to happen. Me!? Can you imagine? Seriously, what up?? NO explanation! So I switched teams at the last minute. But only my points from August seem to have transferred to the Met Branch Team. The Met Branch Team was the only local team that wasn’t full. There was one rider on the team. I’m the only rider on the team to log any miles.
Hey, if I don’t get banned from here, maybe I can ride on one of BikeArlington’s teams next year!
The greatest reward resulting from this adventure was meeting Greenbelt and members of the Proteus family and undoubtedly the most enjoyable miles were those ridden on the Proteus group rides, and the bike move!
