I doubt we can catch them just by riding more. Our only hope is recruitment.

Try this. Go to your NBC profile page, click on “My Account”, then select “Edit Profile”. Scroll down until you see “My Groups” on the left column. If you don’t see Washington Area All-Stars as your team, click “Search”, find, select. Thanks!
My local group is FAAB, as I used a link from their email to join NBC. But I think that I figured out how to switch to the Washington Area All-stars which now appears as my “team” on my NBC profile page. Ride on!

ParticipantAre they giving away the Gold prizes every month?
https://nationalbikechallenge.org/prizes
They have the Huffy Good Vibrations Cruiser bikes, the Saris car bike rack and the Scott’s year supply of toilet paper listed for the Gold level. I don’t see a Grand Prize listed yet.
I’m not sure what I would do if I won the Huffy bike. Capital Bikeshare works just fine for casual rides in the comfortable upright riding position. I don’t have to store those bikes inside like I would have to do with the Huffy. I could give the bike away to someone in the unlikely scenario that I win. But I would probably keep the year’s supply of toilet paper, as a badge of honor. How many people can say that they have ever won a year’s supply of toilet paper?

It’s impossible to tell exactly what they will have after the first month, as they announce only one month at a time. But generally they are similar from month to month, except for the Grand Prize, which comes only at the end..

Actually, the link doesn’t matter. Local groups are assigned entirely based on the home address you provide. But our team is open to anyone from the Metro DC area (defined as either within 2 hours of DC by bike, or actually commuting by bike to DC).
The NBC allows you to have one local group, one team, one workplace, one school, and one league. You’ll also be listed in your city and your state. I’ve already encountered a few people who didn’t think they could be on our team if they were already on a workplace, but that is a misconception.

ParticipantBut didn’t they at least announce what the Grand Prize would be, early in last year’s challenge?

Edit: Never mind. I clearly can’t read dates.

ParticipantThat was posted in April 2014.

ParticipantI might have another recruit. She’s training for a long-distance triathlon, so that means plenty of time on the bike.
I may not be riding too much myself, but I hope to make up for it by getting more people for the team.

ParticipantAs Steve O said, recruiting is the way to success.
By most metrics (absent total points) we are kicking butt.
Knowing that the number of team points equals 20 times the number of rides plus the miles ridden we can determine the number of rides per team
Gainesville 1503 rides (4.5 rides/team member)
Washington 1447 rides (6.6 rides/member)
Plano 810 rides (4.0 rides/member)Average ride distance shows the value of rides of any distance
Gainesville 26 miles/ride
Washington 23 miles/ride
Plano 40 miles/rideThe number of riders with more than 100 points also favors Washington
Gainesville 158 riders (48% of the team)
Washington 134 riders (61% of the team) – the down side is that we have over 80 riders who have reported less than 100 points (possibly just not logged)
Plano 131 riders (64% of the team)The number of riders with more than 750 points also favors Washington
Gainesville 19 riders (6% of the team)
Washington 21 riders (10% of the team)
Plano 12 riders (6% of the team)Now here is the ask – look at your community’s leaderboard and reach out to the unaffiliated riders from your community. Get them to join the All-Stars.

ParticipantHere are the unaffiliated riders from Arlington (as of a few minutes ago) from the top 30 riders. If anybody has a relationship with these riders, please reach out to them.
Todd Furse (1016 points)
Greg Halter (849)
Dave Clemmer (801)
Jennifer Weiss (727)
Dezubiria Michael (713)
Elizabeth Denton (476)If we could recruit these six individuals, they would bring 4582 points to the team. That would close over half the gap between the All-Stars and Gainesville. The other communities likely have similar potential. Given the value in steady riding, the next 30 (rank 31-60) riders might yield similar results.

ParticipantI’ve contacted Jennifer Weiss.

ParticipantThe people I have in mind haven’t signed up for the NBC. One signed up a couple days ago but he hasn’t gotten around to logging his miles yet. I’m pretty sure he will. He’s probably good for at least 120-140 points a week (including the 20-pt. daily bonuses).
I think I could get a few more people too. They would be lower mileage, but any extra miles/points are a positive in the large team category. Some might be moderate mileage/points. I don’t know any of the unaffiliated super riders.

ParticipantDoes anyone know this guy? If so, recruit him. What would be cooler than being the only team with a Supreme Court Justice?
