Don’t know what to do now that Freezing Saddles 2015 is over? Motivate yourself to exercise, and potentially win prizes, by participating in the National Bike Challenge May 1-September 30! You can sign up now so you’ll be ready when it starts. (If you signed up last year, you’re already in, and don’t need to sign up again.) Please don’t hesitate to join the team just because you’re not sure how many miles you will bicycle–EVERY mile helps!

    To join:

    1. Sign up at the National Bike Challenge registration page.

    2. If you’re local to the Washington, DC area (two hours by bike from downtown), join the Washington Area All-Stars team! You can do this by going to the Washington Area All-Stars team page and clicking on “JOIN.” You can also join a school team and a workplace team if you like.

    3. If you have a smartphone, you can use it to keep track of your miles automatically:
    a. Sign up for Strava, MapMyFitness, Moves, or Endomondo.
    b. Link the app to your National Bike Challenge account by signing in and going to Edit My Profile. At the bottom left of that page is a place where you can authorize the relevant app.
    c. Put the app on your phone, and use it when riding.
    d. Sign in to the National Bike Challenge site at least once a week, and on the last day of each month, and click on the “Log Miles” button, then click on “Sync Now” on the page that comes up.

    4. If you have a Garmin, you can use it to keep track of your miles automatically:
    a. Sign up for Strava. (You can also do this with MapMyFitness, but I’m keeping this simple by avoiding posting two sets of directions.)
    b. While logged in to Strava, click on the red arrow in the upper right, then choose “Upload activity.” You will be given options to either upload from your Garmin or, if you already use the Garmin site to upload miles, to sync your Garmin and Strava accounts.
    c. Sign in to the National Bike Challenge site at least once a week, and on the last day of each month, and click on the “Log Miles” button, then click on “Sync Now” on the page that comes up.

    5. If you have neither a smartphone or a Garmin, you can still enter miles manually. Sign in to the National Bike Challenge site and click on the “Log Miles” button, then fill in the information under “MANUALLY LOGGED MILES” and click the “LOG MILES” button.

It looks like the lead is now 17k . Also, I just realized that my husband was not on the team, so I fixed that.

Note to others: It turns out neither husband nor I were logging miles for the team when I thought we were. You might want to double check by going here and putting in your name. If you’re not in our teams rankings, trouble shoot from there.

Woo-hoo! With tonight’s commute home I hit 2000 miles even! That was my goal for this year’s NBC and I haven’t even done 50 States yet! 😮

Just took a look at the data on a points per rider basis for the top 20 teams. The left column shows the rank by points per team and the far right column shows points per rider The Henry Street team appear to be turbocharged, with a 1,500 point lead over the next closest team.

Our lead is still razor thin. Keep riding and recording and encourage your fellow riders to do the same.

I signed up today. Not my strongest summer of riding due to some issues but every bit helps I suppose!

Also, I think I saw dbb sitting on the grass by the ramp leading up to the 14th st bridge (VA side) with a clipboard this morning. I smiled.

Indeed I was. The periodic bike count to validate the awesome set of Arlington County automatic bike counters. Today I was testing an app develop by the Rails to Trails Conservancy

In two hours we saw over 600 cyclists using the 14th Street Bridge bike lane. Way cool!

One of them was me. Thanks for volunteering. It’s good to be counted.

Latest data from the NBC leaderboard. The competition couldn’t be much tighter. Great job to everybody!

The All Stars have a narrow lead over Gainesville. We need to keep riding and recording.

    NBC%2020150922%20Miles_zpslrzerm1h.jpg

Between Gainesville and the All Stars, we have ridden 1.23 million miles! That is about 50 times around the globe.

We continue to ride more consistently. Although we have fewer total miles than Gainesville, we have ridden shorter distances more often.

YES! I DID IT!!! With today’s commute I cracked 5,000 points to hit “Diamond” for the first time!

That means I made both my mileage goal (2,000) and points goal with a week to spare! :D

I try not to be a jerk but sometimes I fail. I removed some riders from the team because in my opinion they lived too far away to claim membership in the DC cycling community. The person who recruited them is mad at me but I feel like we have to draw a line somewhere. Should people from Frederick or Leesburg be allowed to join? I want to be inclusive but it seems like cheating to go so far afield for members…

I think we’ve been clear from the beginning about who is allowed to join. There could be some dispute at the margins. (Two hours from DC would be a much shorter distance for me than for a 20-year-old with a road bike.) But I don’t see that anyone clearly outside of our catchment area has anything to complain about if excluded.

Both are considered a part of the Washington Metropolitan Area:

Since many riders in the region start/finish or pass through Leesburg, I’m inclined to include people from there. I could go either way with Frederick since I find it 50/50 whether people considered it a suburb of DC or Baltimore. To muddy the water even more, many people commute to DC from both and identify as from the DC area. For those reasons, I’m inclined to include them, but that’s my personal opinion.

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG) definitely spans those jurisdictions. What is MWCOG? They’re the people who organize Bike to Work Day Metro DC regionally…

I’d say Frederick, Gaithersburg, Leesburg, Haymarket, Manassas, Dumfries, Indian Head, Bowie and Greenbelt make a pretty good border: http://www.biketoworkmetrodc.org/first-time-rider-info/bike-to-work-day-2015-pit-stops/
