Just for the record, the term cracker was used in a FB post by a teammate who meant no harm. He removed the offending term as soon as he learned it had upset some of the Gainesville riders. The All-Star who described our opponents as crackers wrote this in a private message that he said I could share here. “I lived in FL for 4 years… The Floridians I hung with referred to themselves as crackers, ie, ranchers who wrangled cattle, and cracked a whip. There was no intention to offend.” The NBC has removed the thread from their message board.

The first time I heard this complaint was three weeks ago when we took the lead that they’d held for two years. I thought we dealt with it then but it resurfaced when we retook the lead Monday.

And, here is a a book on the Florida Cowboys “Cracker: Florida’s Enduring Cowboys” by Jon Kral https://books.google.com/books/about/Cracker.html?id=HEYGAAAACAAJ&hl=en

In 1521, Spainish explorers landed on the Flordia coast, bringing with them cattle as a mobile food supply. The men that cared for these Andalusain cattle evolved into America’s first cowboys, the Florida Cracker Cowman.

I had assumed the original name calling of Fred was auto-corrected from “fed” as in “retired fed” and retired federal worker.

Regardless, Fred in cycling circle general is a relative term just like hipster, nutty crunchy,….

Basically a Fred is anyone that has a lower skill & experience to equipment investment ratio than you have. So, when I falsely thought I was quick and skilled while in grad school riding a RSX equipped rusty Specialized Allez, I had a extremely high self-assigned Fred ratio score. Pretty much anyone I saw back than was more Fred than I. If I had had some sort of $18,000 Halo bike, like a Specialized S Work McClaren, my Fred ratio score would have fallen with no change in my skills nor experience.

Ahhhh! I see now. I’d also thought it was an auto-correct on “Fed,” but I guess that speaks to the “brain within the beltway” mentality.

That’s actually a handy term, insofar as I’ve noticed the types. Coming from the videogame community I thought of them as “buying the win,” a phrase for a player who is spending real-world money on in-game items or boosts in an attempt to make up for lesser skill. At anyrate, interesting to hear a one-word term for it.

And I’d definitely say we have our far share of Freds in the area, what with the high paygrades tracking with old demographics and nice paved trails hereabouts. ;)

Getting back to statistics and numbers.

The difference between Gainesville and WAAS is about 0.3 percent, with Gainesville at 901,660 points and WAAS at 904,970 points.

Both teams have been recruiting hard.

    • Gainesville had 350 members on 1 Jun, 371 on 1 Jul (up 6% from the previous month), 398 on 1 Aug (up 7%), and 445 on 2 Sep (up 12%).
    • Washington had 246 members on 1 Jun, 261 on 1 Jul (up 6% from the previous month), 309 on 1 Aug (up 18%), and 360 on 2 Sep (up 17%).

There are some wildcards out there in the team members included in the member count who haven’t yet recorded any points. Of Gainesvilles 445 members, only 337 (76%) have logged any points. Washington has 304 (of 360) (84%) of the team members who have logged any points. If 25 team members (regardless of team) suddenly sync their miles and they are only Silver level, those 25 members would bring over 6000 points to their team, roughly double the difference today.

Update from 8 am today – the margin has shrunk to a razor thin 1090 points. With the hard chargers on both teams, that could swing with a single recruit (or somebody that hasn’t synch’d in a couple of weeks). In deference to the education challenges this country faces, we have reduced the challenge to just 2 R’s – riding and recruiting

    Numbers. Yum!

The All Stars have a 2,087 point lead over Gainesville. That is 0.23%!

From a collaborative perspective, the WAAS and Gainesville teams collectively have ridden 1,066,479 miles, 3.43% of the total miles (31.1 million) ridden in the NBC by all 1300+ teams. This is from two teams that have 805 members, or 0.88% of the 91,557 total riders participating in the NBC.

Short answer, yes. Correct statement is below.

Between the two teams there are potentially 164 Rip van Winkles who might awake and log all the miles they have been riding.

Gainesville has a razor thin edge. You can help close the gap with a little missionary work. How, you ask? Look at your local leaderboard and identify those riders that have a pile of points but no team affiliation. If you know any of them, encourage them to join the Washington Area All Stars. For the Arlington leaderboard there seem to be at least six riders in the platinum category – Mr. Maccaroni, Mr. Clemmer, Mr. Dezubiria, Mr. Gutterman, Mr. Bewley, and Mr. Quentin; that do not have an team affiliation.

If anybody knows them, please invite them to join the WAAS. The instructions are at the first post of this thread.

If you are a member of the Washington Area All Stars in a different local community, please look at your local leaderboard to see if there are riders that might be invited to join the All Stars.

Here is this morning’s data in graphical form from this morning. As we wrap up the competition we are likely to see this one go down to the wire. Gainesville leads the WAAS by 1321 points (0.14% of their points) on 919,684 points (Gaineville’s). Plano is shown on the graphics because they are in 3d place nationally although they aren’t locked in the battle for first place.

This graphic shows the point gap between the WAAS and Gainesville. In this graphic, negative means that the WAAS has the lead. The difference is not really perceptible at this point.

    NBC%2020150905%20%20Point%20Difference_zps4fmoqosz.jpg

The WAAS rides more consistently. WAAS averages 159 riders each day compared to Gainesville’s 141 riders each day and Plano’s 63.

    NBC%2020150905%20%20Rider%20Days_zpsuzc0saqh.jpg

Gainesville leads the WAAS by about 45K total miles in the NBC. We ride fewer miles each day. In terms of average miles per rider-day, we are solidly in 3d place. We have 23.5 miles per rider-day compared to Gainesville’s 28.9 and Plano’s 38.9. We don’t ride as far but we ride more consistently. Our high standing is a result of the fact the WAAS rides more consistently, attributable to the fact that many of the team are commuters or utility cyclists. The little spikes are likely the effect of recruiting which dumps a lot of miles and points into the system.

    NBC%2020150905%20%20Miles%20per%20Rider%20Day_zpsvhmarayd.jpg

Team members – Gainesville has 446, WAAS has 360 and Plano has 236 members. Given we are neck and neck with Gainesville, recruiting folks who have been riding all summer might effectively close the gap. The other approach is to increase the “yield” from the existing members of the team. If you know somebody that hasn’t logged their miles in a while, encourage them to do so.

Both Gainesville and the WAAS have team members that haven’t yet logged any miles. Gainesville has about 108 members in that category and the WAAS has about 54 members who haven’t logged any miles. Additionally, if you look at the leaderboard you might see riders you know who haven’t sync’d in a while. Those riders are likely to have “points” earned but not yet reflected in the NBC point totals

Bottom line? Keep riding, recruiting and logging your miles. Now let’s go for a bike ride!

Recruiting effort successful. I just joined the team and my points for the summer bumped us into the top spot.

Welcome to the team! Got friends?

I’d expect the back and forth will go on till the end of the NBC

I put in my first full century last Friday going from FCC up the C&O to White’s Ferry, over to 15 and the W&OD with a spur into Ashburn for lunch and then back on the W&OD back to the MVT and home. It was a lot of fun. I’ll be doing the 50 States Ride on Saturday, hope to see some of you there, too.

Fantastic! Congratulations on your first Century! That’s just the sort of thing we need to “Gaine” on them.

I hope a bunch of us will add a nice boost from 50 State this weekend. I’ll be there distributing high-fives in honor of the great hand-shaped state of Michigan.

What’s with dcv? Why isn’t he on the team?

The WAAS have regained the lead, albeit razor thin. This morning we have a lead of 7101 points over Gainesville. That is about 2/3 of a percent.

To put that in perspective, if a couple of riders who have been riding fairly consistently joins or logs their miles the lead will switch.

We need to keep riding and recruiting. The 50 States might be a great opportunity to score a couple of new members. Might be appropriate to print out the first message in this thread so you can hand it to a potential recruit.
