Only two more days before the National Bike Challenge starts, so I thought I’d review the instructions for joining both the competition and the Washington Area All-Stars:

To join the National Bike Challenge competition:

1. If you are already a member of Facebook, MapMyRide, or Endomodo, you can log in using one of them at this page. OR go to the registration page of the National Bike Challenge site, fill in the form and click “Register.”
2. Select a method for logging your rides.
• If you are currently using Endomondo, MapMyRide, or Moves, you can link those with your NBC account and your miles will automatically be transferred over, provided you log into the NBC site at least once every 6 days. Or you can set up a new account using one of these services. Information on each of these services can be found at this link.
• If you are currently a member of Strava or Garmin Connect, you can set up an account on MapMyRide, and then use FitnessSyncer to have your rides automatically synched to MapMyRide, from which they will automatically be picked up by NBC, provided you log into the NBC site at least once every 6 days. However, do not sync from Strava or Garmin Connect if you are already uploading your rides to MapMyRide, as this will result in double counting those miles.
• You can manually enter your rides each day. Obviously, this takes more effort. However, it gets the miles onto the NBC site instantly, while other methods often seem to result in a delay of several hours before they appear on the NBC site (even if you manually force a sync). And miles entered manually can be edited, while miles that are synched cannot.
3. Remember to log in at least once every 6 days if you are synching your rides. If you are manually entering miles, make sure you enter all miles for the month by 11:59 PM on the last day of the month.

To join the Washington Area All-Stars team:

1. Join the team on the NBC site:
• While logged into the NBC site, go to this link and click the “Join” link, OR
• Follow the instructions on this step-by-step video:

2. Optional: If you are a member of Strava, go to this link and join the Washington Area All-Stars Strava team. This will not have any effect on your standing in the National Bike Challenge, but is a place for team members to conduct discussions, compare mileage, etc.

Questions? Feel free to send me a private message.

Will do once they get the site functional again. The join a team portion is currently down–“THIS SECTION IS TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE.
We’re currently making some adjustments to bring you a better experience. Please check back in an hour or two for updates!”

Sigh! It seems to have been going up and down all day. It looks like it’s back up now, but I can’t make any guarantees about five minutes from now!

I’m on the team, at least I think I am. Can anyone else see me?

I just tried to join the team but the search feature is not working. Sigh.

Can you join by going directly to the team page, https://nationalbikechallenge.org/team/4296, and clicking the “Join” button?

No, the only join button on that page takes me to the initial registration page for the overall website, not for joining an individual team. I watched their YouTube video of how to join a team and that is how I learned that a section of a webpage is missing that is supposed to show you available options on what to search for.

Are you sure you are logged in to the National Bike Challenge site? The search button is there for me when logged in, but not when logged out. I know we’ve had issues from time to time with people getting unexpectedly logged out after they have logged in.

I finally figured out how to register, so I’m signed up (under my name–Erin)

You’ll have to forgive me for not being very good about biking this week–the area outside my building in Rosslyn has flooded, to the point you can’t walk or drive through it. Once that clears up I’ll be back on my bike (I’m hoping by Saturday).

I just tried the link you sent again and now it is working! I have now joined. Lots of bugs in the website or perhaps they have been overloaded with people signing up at the last minute.

Yeah, I think it’s a combination of their working on the site to eliminate the bugs in time for the challenge, and lots of people signing up at the last moment. But I’m glad to have you on our team!

Just a heads up but syncing from mapmyride is not working right now. They (NBC robots) are working on it – so don’t get uber frustrated and set yourself on fire or anything. Not that I wouldn’t empathize because NBC is THE. WORST. SITE. EVER.

And lots of people complained about the Endomondo interface last year (and the year before). Sigh.

MapMyRide is working some of the time for some people right now. My ride this morning, for example, got picked up almost immediately on NBC. But I’ve had other rides not sync for as long as 3 days. And some people haven’t had it sync at all.

Believe me, I share your frustration with the site! I’m administrator for a team, a league, a workplace, and a school. I’m also a rider myself, and spent some time trying to make sure that Marylanders weren’t left out of all the local challenges. I feel like I’ve spent more time on the NBC support forum than I have actually cycling!

Well NBC is lucky to have you and Rod, that’s for sure. :)
