From DCMilitary.com:
“The first military test flight of an aircraft was made from the Fort Myer parade ground on Sept. 9, 1908, when Orville Wright kept the Wright Flyer in the air for a minute and 11 seconds. The thirteenth test flight ended in tragedy when, after three minutes aloft, the aircraft crashed. Wright was severely injured, and a passenger, Lt. Thomas Selfridge, became the first powered aviation fatality.”Thanks to this, I now know why the Air National Guard base near my hometown in Michigan is named “Selfridge!”
(Hasty photo for fear of arrest…)

There’s actually two plaques commemorating this flight at the Henry Gate to Fort Meyer at the corner of Arlington Blvd and Pershing. Komorebi made it a stop on the “Top Gun” ride last year.
They are of course located in an easily accessible place:

There is! I just don’t have the clearance to ride through Ft. Myer or the temerity to ride through the cemetery to photograph it…

I promise you can see them
ETA: This is the view through the chain-link fence at the Washington Canoe Club. I didn’t take a picture from the Key Bridge because I thought I could get closer, but the brush was too thick along the sides of the C&O trail.
According to legend, these rocks mark the point where three sisters drowned attempting to cross the river. In one version of the story, the sisters themselves turned to stone, and that is how the islands came to be.

ParticipantWhat used to be the flagship Landsburgh department store (8th and E), eventually became the Landsburgh cultural center for a few brief years, and only venue where Minor Threat performed their song “Salad Days” live just this one time. I listened to “Salad Days” album on my way over. Another location could be “Inner Ear Studios” where the “Salad Days” was recorded over in Arlington right off 4 mile run.
This gave some insight to what it was like back then: https://pages.vassar.edu/musicalurbanism/2013/06/04/view-from-suburbia-dks/

ParticipantCouldn’t think of a specific spot for Bad Brains, but they did perform at the Original 9:30 club which was here at 930 F Street and it’s hard to believe this bustling white collar shopping/business strip of D.C. was once crowded with punk rockers like I was in my teenage years. Wish I could have been here!

Damn I didn’t recognize it! Only the façade and our memories remain. Places that are gone indeed.
The RAZZ fan approves of this thread nonetheless.
