Well you all on this forum are so so smart. Last year it was suggested that I could shorten my commute by riding from my home in maryland and then putting the bike on the REX bus and riding the rest of the way into Fort Belvoir on the bus. I did it this mornng. So much better than the 19 mile commute. It was an easy ride out of the neighborhood and to the huntington Metro. I had watched the video of how to put my bike on the bus and on one other occasion had my husband with me in case it was hard. It is not the rack in the front of the bus is easy to do and the bike went on easily. the ride from my house to huntington is so short I wasn’t even hot. I am thrilled. As long as the trip home is as easy, I just might enjoy this winter riding thing. (NOT) sorry I still miss my 90 degree days but it is definately doable.

    You guys give great advice.

the bike on the bus thing is a great way to deal with both issues of distance, and abysmal cycling infra. A major good thing thats happened the last few years.

My concern is what happens when it becomes popular enough you can’t count on a rack on the bus being available.

Maybe then it will become clear that better infra IS needed?

Glad you found a solution that works for you. You may also find yourself taking the bus/bike for one way and the bike the entire other way. You now have that option. It’s what I do most days from Fairfax (near GMU) to SE Washington. When I want to be social, I’ll ride in and go to coffee club, etc but I can still leave at a reasonable time and get home in time to make dinner by riding the bus.

Oh, and when you arrive at the bus stop to find it just pulling away, you can chase it down on bike, and get on at the next stop. I’ve had this happen at least a handful of times. :)

What a shame you aren’t taking advantage of the fantastic US 1 cycletrack that runs from the beltway to Belvoir. Oh, wait….Nevermind.

by “cylcetrack” you mean Cars will track you down if you are riding a bicycle, and leave track marks along your back?
