I used an automotive gear puller on my single speed conversion of dumpster find road bike.
The crank puller I used on it does essentially the same thing as the auto gear puller, except it threads into the crank arm instead of grabbing onto the gear. The leverage would probably be about the same, I’d think. I had two wrenches going in opposite directions on the thing, and couldn’t budge it. A new bottom bracket isn’t expensive enough to warrant me working any harder on that old crank; I’ll just replace it.

Why bother with a new headset? I would think if the old one worked, just leave it alone (after repacking).
They have quill stems with modern handlebar attachments. That may make more sense than an adapter plus stem.
New saying at the DKel household, WWDD?
DKel: Can I buy [insert random bike tool]?

I expect the answer should be expressible as a mathematical equation, and that equation would not be N+1, at least not for any definition of 1 that hozn would accept.

Hey, how did I get thrown into this?
For the record, I “only” have 3 bikes with no plan/ability to add to that unless I also n-1. Space-constrained — the brilliantly simple way to rein in my consumerist tendencies.

But only for a second as he rides past…then he gets really small really fast.

ParticipantBack on topic…
After I get the headset put together, I think wheels are the next step. Then I can put them on and measure for chain line so I can get the right bottom bracket spindle length. (Man, this is complicated). A couple of questions for you experts:
I’ve just been looking at these. I’m intrigued by the fixed/fixed rear hub, and I like the machined braking surface. Black is nice, too, and so is the price on these. Does anyone have thoughts? I believe vvill recommended the fixed/fixed configuration; there’s more flexibility to that in the long run, isn’t there?
Last thing, my front fork has these thingies:
to go in these thingies:
like this:
How important would it be to keep these on there, since there are no flared edges to hold the wheel in if the skewer loosens up? Seems like those washers aren’t very substantial to hold the wheel in the fork ends, and with track hubs, the wheels will be held on with regular old nuts, which are easy to crank down.

I think this is what he meant:

i.e., the latter.

ParticipantYou don’t need the retaining washers. Unless you’re a lawyer, in which case bikes are very dangerous and the washers are a vital safety feature that I would never suggest you remove because you might die.
