ParticipantThey’re also back at TJ Memorial making stops at the bottom of the 14th St Bridge for not taking to the sidewalk on the short one-way stretch of road.

When was this? I was out there around 7:45/8am both today and yesterday and didn’t see any police there at that time. There was the normal empty parked police car that’s there pretty often, but no actual officers around.
I saw 2 people salmon in that area today and no one said a thing to them.

i came thru about 830a today and the officer stopped a cyclist who took the road. Not sure if he got a ticket.

ParticipantThere was definitely a cop at the TJ Memorial making cyclists get on the sidewalk. Another good reason to go the other way and enjoy the backside tailwind on Hains!

ParticipantI’ve never quite understood why salmoning the stretch of E Basin Drive by TJ was so popular, especially when the sidewalk is not horribly clogged by tourists. One may execute a very graceful, momentum-saving ascent to the sidewalk by taking the western crosswalk across E Basin Drive (from 14th St. Bridge Trail off-ramp closest to the CaBi station), cutting the corner into the northern crosswalk, and going straight up the ramp to the sidewalk. It’s doubtful that Officer Friendly will cite you for the few yards of salmoning necessary to cut the corner.

MPD had bike officers out ticketing cyclists at 15th & Penn (for jumping the green light for cyclists when the White House ellipse traffic has a protected left). Small hope they’ll also ticket all of the motorists who try to go during the cyclists’ green cycle.
When this was my commute and I was headed eastbound, I would always line up in the car lanes, then go with the green (when the never-used left from the ellipse also had green), and move back into the bike lanes on the other side of the intersection. I got some strange looks, but perfectly legal and you don’t have to wait for that silly light. Doesn’t work westbound, though.

I’ve seen people doing that but was always a bit confused! It makes perfect sense now.

ParticipantAt 15th and Penn I just follow the bike light.
I like the idea that we even have lights for bikes. I remember when we didn’t. So I try to use them.
