I’ve seen MPD bike cops pulling over people for riding on the sidewalk on 19th street. From a safety point of view, I think targeting texters/distracted, running red lights and/or not using lights after dark would be more constructive. Lots of cars in the evenings without their lights on lately too — they haven’t seemed to notice that it’s getting dark earlier.
PS. the comment quote in the WAMU story gets it right: it seems off to target sidewalk riding on downtown streets with no bike lanes, especially the streets that are one-way (designed for the convenience of flush through out of town commuters at rush hour). Those one-way streets are annoying for bikes, deliveries etc.. It’s sort of another case of the suburban drive-here people complaining the loudest about people who want to use the streets for any other purpose than rush-hour single person car commuting.
PS2. if they really want to go after the annoyance factor, they should start ticketing for blocking the box, on pretty much any of the north-south downtown streets in rush hour — that would really help.
