There was a path, or at least a way through the vines, from the foot of Union along the river, south of the old Ford plant. I rode through there frequently starting in the late 80s. The path emptied into a parking lot perpendicular to the bridge, facing the river, now closed to car traffic. Im not sure if this was MVT – it was not always a striped, signed, separate, and continuous trail. It changed and closed and reopened periodically as the area redeveloped.

Using the Internet Archive Wayback Machine, I found a 1995 map of the Mount Vernon Trail. It shows a trail through Jones Park that connects to Green Street to Lee Street and then to Union. The map also shows the routing of the trail (now called the alternate MVT) to the west of the old power plant.

You’re a genius. I don’t recall the routing but I do recall being pleasantly surprised when I saw that the new trail went down to the river and around the townhouses at Ford’s Landing (where there was an old, decrepit Ford factory).

I told the attorney that Royal Street used to go under the bridge to South Street and this is clearly shown on the map.

I don’t recall this. I do remember the Ford plant being kind of spooky. Old Town was a bit of a mess 30 years ago. I remember looking at townhouses on Prince Street near the Metro. They could be had for a song. They were practically shacks. Now you can’t touch them for under a million. Sad face.
