Giving this a bump. The weather is looking good for Saturday’s celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the first 4.5 mile segment of the Mount Vernon Trail opening. We have 120 people registered so far. The event runs from 10-1 with tables from some of our community partners. Speakers are from 11-11:30.

This was a great event hosted by the Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail. Both Fairfax County and Alexandria issued proclamations recognizing the 50th anniversary of the trail.

Judd received the proclamations on behalf of the many volunteers who have helped make the Mount Vernon trail a gem of a trail system.

A special guest at the ceremony was Barbara Lynch, who along with Eleanor Pickering were the leaders of a host of volunteers who built the first 4 1/2 miles of the trail in 1972.

Thank you to everyone who attended the 50th Anniversary for the MVT. Some of the highlights for me:

Barbara Lynch was able to attend and see people celebrating her legacy.

Asking people to raise their hand if they had volunteered or donated and seeing 100 hands go up.

Seeing so many kids at the event.

Having a bald eagle flyover in the middle of the ceremony.

How well attended the event was. We had 200 people registered and a lot of trail users stop in.

    The weather was awesome.

Seeing a bunch of people that I haven’t seen since the pandemic started. Heard several comments that it was like a bicycling family reunion.

Supervisor Storck’s comments about one of his coworkers recalling how the opening of the trail was a life changer for her as a young person because it provided freedom of transportation and mobility.

Someone asked Barbara Lynch if she could have imagined how well the trail is used and she said that in the early days when the trail was less trafficed she would get excited any time that she saw someone using it.

Although I’m the face and chief hype man for FoMVT, this event was the work of a group of volunteers putting in hundreds of hours of work as well as the partnership with NPS.
