ParticipantYou think maybe they could extend their jurisdiction to include the Falls Church portion of the W&OD?
I mean, I know it’s important that “cross-country skiers” (all, what? Two of them?) get their workouts in when they can, but it seems to me keeping the trail open would be a bit more of a priority.

NOVAParks has the equipment, we just need to convince them to use it. NOVA Parks staff can be reached at wod@nvrpa.org If you happen to know or run into any of the members of their Board of Directors, make sure to give them an earful about it as well.

ParticipantMaybe Arlington could be entrepreneurial and sell its services to the fair city of Falls Church.

Arlington already handles a few public services for Falls Church such as firefighting and I believe the local court. Fairfax handles another gov’t service in Falls Church, but I don’t remember which one. So there’s a precedent.

Falls Church City has a General District Court, but the Arlington Circuit Court is the court of general jurisdiction and hears larger actions. We have our own volunteer fire department, which is located just in Arlington, but has responsibilities for all of Falls Church City, and parts of Arlington and Fairfax Counties. I don’t know what Fairfax County does for us – we now own all the property the four schools sit on, we have a library, a mayor and a skate park on the way!
All that said, it would be nice if FCC would pay Arlington to plow the trail, but are we missing the 10 point buck on the trail here, Fairfax County? So what if you can get to Broad Street ice-free, you won’t get further than Shreve Road.

ParticipantI think FC sold its water utility to Fairfax. (Prior to that, the FC water utility provided water to much of eastern Fairfax County.) Fairfax Water now provides water to FC residents.

Fairfax also provides certain health and community services, under the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board.

Arlington is currently working on developing a snow clearing plan for its major trails for this coming winter. (Please, hold your applause until the end of the presentation.)
Hi! Thanks for asking the trail users for input.
What exactly does the snow clearing plan entail? I’m assuming plowing. But since many of the snowfalls around here are of the dusting -> 2 inch variety, where plowing isn’t quite as useful, do you also put down salt/gravel? Or use one of those industrial spinning broom things to brush the lighter snow off the trails? IMHO, with all the dips and bops and tree roots causing bumps and ruts in the trails I can’t picture a plow being as effective on the trails as they are on the roads.
Thanks for the information!

Maybe a vehicle like this. Add a snow blade on the front.

ParticipantI would love Arlington forever if they got an MOU to do this on the MVT. But I realize NPS is unlikely to ever allow that despite my dreams.
I do hope this is quite successful despite the fact that as a FFX resident riding from the south, I won’t really experience any of it. Maybe it will set a standard for other jurisdictions or so I would hope. Kudos to ArlCo for willingness to do it.
