That was you? I often did call you crazy when I saw you taking the ramp off of Key Bridge. :)

Doubt I can make it tonight… contractors at the house and the Minister of Finances and the Interior would certainly not look positively on my disappearance when it comes time to reviewing work done and nod approvingly.

I seem to have read about Friday morning coffee locations?

There’s a crew of us that ride from Vienna, VA leaving at 630am. We roll down the W&OD, then the custis, and exit the trail at 15th betweeen taylor and Stafford around 705am. You’re more than welcome to meet us there and then roll to Java Shack if you’d like the company.

some folks even ride the route backwards until they meet us (for extra mileage), then join up.

Continuing with this Steve O, is that you riding over the Key Bridge coming into Georgetown in early evenings? I always see someone doing it and I’m happy because of all the damn drivers that annoy me. Now as for turning down the WHF, ha, that takes some balls given how fast some people drive it. Then again, I sometimes ride down Rt 1 south of OT Alexandria in the morning where people also approach beltway speeds en route to the beltway because they see some logical connection that going to a 55-65mph highway requires going 65mph.

No. I no longer commute into DC, but I did for years. I have had about 3-4 opportunities in the last couple of months to relive those glory days and make the Whitehurst Whoosh, though. I’ve not ridden on the roadway on the Key Bridge, however (well, maybe once or twice); I generally enter the WHF from the sidewalk.

Although some call me crazy, when I worked in DC I took the Whitehurst off the Key Bridge (only inbound; do not ride the Whitehurst outbound). It has the advantage of no intersections. It has the disadvantage of feeling like an expressway. However, sight lines are good, there’s a 4′ shoulder (with debris to make it more exciting), and you get a downhill running start.

When you reach the light at the pedestrian crossing just before Washington Circle, go through and wait right in front of the yellow crash barriers between the tunnel traffic and the circle traffic–essentially where the “W” is in the picture below.

Then when the light turns red for the cars on K St., you get a private tunnel to ride through. Right down the middle if you want. Then you’re at 21st & K and almost there.

Welcome and good luck. Hope to see you at an FCC or other event before long.

So, that’s what I do wrong: I don’t wait for the cars at the tunnel. I take the tunnel and hoist the 2 wheeled flag. Off hours especially, WHF isn’t bad at all. Georgetown isn’t either at that hour (pre-7:30am-ish), but has the disadvantage of some blind corners at red lights. I also take the bridge on the Key bridge a lot though, so I’m pretty sure I’m certifiable.
