That same article says it’s open now. I’m curious to hear what it looks like. It wouldn’t be easy to get a car over all that rock… Glad nobody was seriously injured

I wonder if speed could have been a factor?

To hop that curb (which is significantly higher than normal, IIRC) *and* break through the concrete side-railing….I’m thinking yes, that SUV must have been moving at a good clip.

Well, then, the obvious solution is reflective vests for pedestrians.

I found this from the NBC article: http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/SUV-Crashes-Through-Memorial-Bridge-Barrier-Potomac-River-192991251.html

Whoever passes through that area will need to get some pics of the damage. After stopping to the side to safely take photos, of course! We don’t need anyone else taking the new “exit ramp!”

That pic makes it look like the river is not deep there. Huh?

Yep, at really low tide there are mudflats visible there.

I passed through this morning, there’s some of those red-and-white plastic construction barriers over the missing section but both sides were open. I didn’t think to get a pic though, I’ll try and do that on the way home.

I would love to see video of the collision. You would really have to want to jump that curb to do that. It’s at least 8 inches tall with a hard 90 degree edge on it.

It’s very close to the shoreline. That pic looks like it was taken from the shore.

Maybe he rolled over when his wheels hit the curb, and then kept rolling.

Even tho it is close to the shoreline, the SUV must have fallen 15 feet. I can’t imagine how anyone could jump that curb, blast through the side of the bridge, drop 15 feet into frigid water and live to tell about it.
