Do any of you carry a mini medical kit in your pack? Yesterday I got stung by something and it hurt like the bejeebus. Fortunately I still had some ice in my bottle so I was able to treat it that way. Though I now wouldnt mind a tiny kit if I could find room for it.
I do. Found a gauze pad, some butterfly strips, couple of those wipes for alcohol and stings and a squeeze pack of A&D are about unnoticeable. they fit in a little box I have that’s about the size of a cig pack but half as thin. Oh, and Snoopy strips. Can’t forget them. Unless of course you’d rather use Sponge Bob or Disney Princess ones

ParticipantWhen I’m mountain biking I do. I bought a compact kit from REI a few years ago and have added to it a little over the years. It helps to read up on First Aid a bit before anything bad happens. Red Cross classes are not a bad idea either.

ParticipantI bring a couple single-pack antiseptic wipes in my bento box. I started doing that after I did a header over the handlebars on the Capital Crescent Trail in 2009 and cut my forehead. (I also bruised my cheek and slammed my shoulder into the ground pretty hard. But nothing was broken.) But I haven’t had to use the wipes other than a single occasion in early 2010 when I tried to hop a curb unsuccessfully and hit my knee on the sidewalk.
I’ve tried to learn from mistakes and modify my riding patterns to lower the risk of injury. While we can’t remove the risk of injury, we can do a lot to lower it. One change was to no longer do any faster riding on the bike/run trails, except on the western part of the W&OD. I save my fast workouts for Hains Point or other open roads.
I don’t do any real mountain biking, despite using a mountain bike much of the time. Extra first-aid items would be a good idea if you’re riding on technical off-road trails.

ParticipantI take a ziploc bag with some essentials (band-aids, antiseptic, etc), roll-it up, tie a piece of string around it, and stick it in the end of the handlebar, leaving a little bit of the string hanging out to be wedged with the bar end cap, so it’s easy to retrieve when needed.

ParticipantI have added various bits of first aid paraphenalia over the years in response to assorted self inflicted wounds i have experienced. My last addition was popsicle sticks to splint my fingers. So many crashes / falls seem to involve the hands meeting the asphalt that more than once immobilizing a sprain was a good idea. The most consistent need has been for sterlizing wipes. Coming to an abrupt halt from 15 mph In a city gutter using ones hands and knees as brakes can really grind some nasty stuff into that oh so tender skin. Only had two crashes in my adult life that I couldn’t ride away from though. Thank the maker.
