I, too, was surprised at this yesterday on my ride home. The sand/cinder gravel is soft and quite deep in places. They really should put up a sign. Hitting that at speed was a little… interesting.

A little signage would be nice. Had to sneak around to find the connector trail to stay on pavement. Also noticed a sign going the opposite direction advising people to cross the road on an unmarked highway on ramp. doesn’t seem like the best idea.

ParticipantFrankly, instead of signage, they should convert the right lane of westbound Fairfax into a temporary two-way trail separated by barriers. The two on-ramp lanes condense into one before merging onto I-66 anyway.
This is a dangerous situation for trail users. There is an obvious solution with very little impact on driver convenience. What would a “bicycle-friendly community” do?

Oh, I know this one! Do nothing and have people fend for themselves?

ParticipantActually, now that I think about it, the impact on drivers would not be insignificant. Having just one lane right there would greatly reduce throughput of the Glebe/Fairfax intersection. Half as many drivers could turn from northbound Glebe onto westbound Fairfax during the limited arrow time, for instance. A lot of drivers might try cutting through N Wakefield to avoid the longer lines in the turn lane at Fairfax.
Still though, safety should not be compromised on account of traffic congestion.

ParticipantIs the trail along S Washington Blvd between Boundary Channel Drive to the Pentagon 9/11 Memorial open? I need to get from dowtown to the AF Memorial this afternoon; I know there’s ongoing construction in the area, but I haven’t been that way in awhile. Wanted to be sure it’s passable or if I should take an alternate route.

Yeah there is a detour on the bridge they have been working on that is separated from the traffic lane by big fences
*going the long way around the pentagon parking lots isnt all that unpleasant anyways

ParticipantCleaned up two broken Miller High Life bottles on the bridges just north of the Crystal City Connector on the MVT trail on the way back from the DC Ride.
Note to the assholes that broke the bottles – there is beer which is actually better than Miller and is packaged in cans. Please switch!

Thank you!! I noticed the glass along the side this morning as I went to CC to check in for bike to work week and wondered how someone could have broken bottles right there and not in the middle of the trail.

ParticipantLast week seemed to be “spike beer bottles on sidewalks week” there’s a couple more spots along my route in alexandria, including whats left of a whole 24 pack of empty Heineken bottles I’m gonna have to go sweep up when I get a chance cause it seems nobody else will.

If you put in a call, click, connect note they usually will clean it up if it’s a public sidewalk… sometimes really fast, sometimes though it takes a few weeks

Send a picture of the spot, too. I also tweet at the city with the Call.Click.Connect report number (social pressure) and have gotten better results with it.

Participant(Arlington, VA) – The W&OD Trail and Four Mile Run Dr are both closed between Columbia Pike and George Mason Drive due to a fallen tree that hit the power lines and caused a brush fire. It was reported on ArlNow: https://www.arlnow.com/2017/05/15/breaking-tree-down-on-power-lines-brush-fire-along-four-mile-run-drive/

It’s the new invasive plant management strategy.

ArlNow posted a update on the situation:
Updated at 2:30 p.m. — The fire has been extinguished and Four Mile Run Drive is expected to reopen shortly. The access road is expected to remain closed until the fallen tree is removed.
While it is not known if the W&OD Trail will be open, trail users will be able to use Four Mile Run Drive (mostly one lane with parking lane) to get between Columbia Pike and George Mason Drive.
