Yikes! Was this just the stock/factory wheel (i.e. hadn’t been re-tensioned or had other work on it)? I thought these were supposed to be pretty tough wheels, though I have only 2nd-hand reports to support that.

I wouldn’t ride it. Well, I probably would, but only while waiting for its replacement. You might want to consider a deeper rim — and maybe more spokes would be good too. For “factory-built” (I think they’re actually hand-built), I’ve had good experience with Easton wheels. You might want to consider the locally-built November FSW23 wheelset too — http://www.novemberbicycles.com/fsw-23/. Those should be really sturdy wheels (especially 28/32) and nice & wide too.

Wheel was new about a year ago. It was a warranty replacement for another Mavic. I had it trued this past May.

It is off the bike. I replaced it with the winter wheels/tires I had hanging in the garage awaiting assembly.

Purchased the initial wheel from Revolution so I’ll pay them a visit.

These are the 20 spoke model? I’ve heard the arguments about why spoke count isn’t important any more but I still run 36/32 on the sturdy bike.

It’s possible they over-tensioned the wheel when they trued it. I believe that this is the explanation for cracks at the spoke holes (tension too high). Hopefully Revolution will help you out; 2500 miles is *way* too few for a wheel failure like that.

I just had to have a Kysrium SL rim replaced because of rim cracks like that. I had more than 2500 miles on them but it was still a little disappointing. It cost me $300 to get the rim and spokes replaced at the factory. Cheaper than a new wheel I guess.

+1 for November. I have a set of their road wheels that is about a year and half old, has been ridden hard, and hasn’t needed any upkeep!

I had a local shop that shall remain nameless try to convince me that the 20 spoke Mavics would support me better than a 48h wheel. I weighted 420lbs at the time…

They should get down on their knees and thank god you won’t name them. :) Those are wheels for light people. (I wouldn’t look at them for anyone over 180, personally.)

They were really nice guys and meant well but I just couldn’t believe they were being serious. I mean, the warranty is pretty sweet but that made no sense at all.

It’s unfortunate but some Mavic wheels do crack like that. I saw a set of cracked Ksyrium SL’s black when I was working at the Pro Shop in Gtown. Not sure what the end result was.
