Here’s a video on the Custis Spurt.

The MVT from Key Bridge to 4MRT was slushy and fun on the Pugsley. It will be terrible tomorrow morning if the temps dip below freezing. Thank you Arlington County and Alexandria City for the trail clearing. Too bad it all stops when one gets to Federal land.

I walked the Custis between the Ballston connector and W&OD (returning at 7 pm). The Custis was cleared from W&OD to past the Ballston connector and I presume to MVT, since they usually do that. The W&OD from Custis towards East Falls Church was cleared as far as I could see. Heading in the other direction, the W&OD looked partially cleared but could have been from use rather than plow, and I couldn’t see far. The Ballston connector was cleared. The entrances to the Custis trail were not plowed, but some were partially cleared by use.

Now I am torn. Tomorrow morning do I ride the cleared Custis to the uncleared MVT to LBJ grove to Pentagon City or the uncleared W&OD to the cleared 4MRT to Eads? Or do I assume that the Washington Blvd trail is cleared so do Custis to Ft. Myer to Washington Blvd? Anyone been on the Washington Blvd trail between the cemetery area to Pentagon?

Regardless if you decide to do Custis to the grove or Wash Blvd., the 110 trail is likely to be cleared alongside the cemetery. So Custis to Ft. Myer is the right choice for either of those.

But the WOD/Custis dilemma is still up for grabs. I have the same dilemma if I decide to go to WTF Coffee Club.

Please tell me a Custis Spurt isn’t what you do in that insulated codpiece you like to wear.

From what I could see of the LBJ grove trail as it comes up to meet the MVT, it was not cleared. I think I’m going to take Long Bridge ► Boundary Channel ► Washington Blvd ► Custis Walk (I didn’t know it was named that) ► Iwo Jima ► Rosslyn ► Georgetown tomorrow after WtFCC. After 45°F tomorrow, the evening commute on the MVT should be fine.

I too would like to know the condition of the Washington Blvd trail.

I’ll be happy to hear what the early commuters recommend for riding the W&OD westbound from Falls Church. Studs? No? Trail? Road?

Love that this community is here for things like this.

    Even with Steve O. ;)

I put studs on, I hope they aren’t especially necessary, but it looks like it could be icy. I’ll follow up.

Fortunately for me it’s a grab-the-bike-with-studs or grab-the-bike-without-studs question, not a mounting tires question. Still, I’ll be happy to get some expert advice to maximize my decision!

Uncleared trails are probably icy rutted mess in the morning. In the afternoon, it’s easy. Here in the western part of Vienna it’s 27.9 F now. Unfortunately, I can’t easily get to the W&OD.

W&od from East Falls Church to Shirlington is rideable. I rode the entire distance on 28s without clipping out. More nervous types may want to Flintstone the bridges.

Spring seems confused on both side of the Atlantic.

Definitely take the bike with studs.
