Trying to figure out if I can bike to the dentist tomorrow.
Thanks!
It’s still pretty much ice packed.

I laid the bike (and myself) down west of Vienna this morning. Riding on the snow alongside the trail was fun for awhile, until I hit a sheet of not-snow.
Hurt my palm and thumb a bit (seems just bruised/strained), but otherwise unharmed. I should have gone mountain biking instead, which I suspect would have been a lot of fun, though may also have involved falling. Oh well. It’s probably a great time to take a couple of rest days
Edit: yes, with studded tires (45NRTH Xerxes). I do sometimes consider getting more aggressively studded tires, but I should really just stick to the roads if I feel compelled to ride on days like today.

Plowed this afternoon
Thanks for that info. Roosevelt Bridge is indeed passable, will have to let D.C. know it’s appreciated. There are a few spots where I66 plows must have pushed some touch ups onto the walk.
And on my approach even the TR Island project Mulchweg was rideable!

ParticipantSpout Run ice rink had almost completely sublimated by yesterday afternoon. As of this morning, just one, easy-to-avoid patch.
Of course, it will melt some today and refreeze tonight.

ParticipantIf you biked yesterday, today will feel like summer (almost) with barely a breeze.
Mostly clear and definitely safe on skinny tires from Braddock metro-Potomac Ave bikepath-CC service road-Long Bridge-Humpback-14th St Bridge.
1st St cycletrack has some large crud chunks you need to weave around.March 16, 2017 at 1:38 pm #1068133FFX_Hinterlands

Thanks for confirming my decision to drive to the dentist. First time in a few years not biking. Humph.

ParticipantFour Mile Run up to Columbia Pike is very good as of this morning. W&OD from Columbia Pike to Custis has a lot of ice patches, but was very much passable with my 32s, just proceed with caution/go slow. Once you hit the Custis trail up to Rosslyn it is almost spotless. I was really surprised I didn’t see any cyclists at all.

The southern National Airport bridge has a good size sheet of solid smooth ice. The rider in front of me ended up sideways, but made a good catch.
Rode the MVT between 4MR and 14th St Bridge, and this was the only section where I walked most of it. The rest of the trail is ride-able with more moderate icy patches that only require going slow. Not a bad ride, especially as I bought new Pearl izumi gloves half off at Wheel Nutz the other day. With any luck, we should see some melting today!

ParticipantTowpath is nigh unrideable. Chain Bridge is passable with studs/knobbies and some serious bike handling skills (the photo below shows the good part…it gets really bad just at the far point in the photo). The RCP trail below G-town has some stretches that remain completely iced over.

ParticipantFolks who biked on those cleared trails in Arlington, I have some bad news. The County Manager has proposed cutting the trail snow clearing program ENTIRELY in his proposed 1 cent cut. You can see the full list here – trail snow clearing is #21 on page [!@&*$ why can’t they number pages!?!?!]. This would save a whopping $50k/year.
Also of interest is #5, which would eliminate the expansion of the street light program. DES says that it will take responsibility for trail lighting in the street light program if and only if it gets the funds for the expanded program. The Manager says DES is taking responsibility for trail lighting regardless, though I’ve never seen that on paper.
You may want to take a minute to remind the countyboard@arlingtonva.us (cc’ing the countymanager@arlingtonva.us) how important the trail snow clearing program is.
Oh, and if you have some time to bike over some counters on cleared trails today, that may be a good idea too

To add some detail to dasgeh’s post, here are the County Manager’s notes on the option of cutting trail snow clearing:
Trail Snow Removal: Eliminate Multi-Use Trail Snow Removal Description of Current Service: As of FY 2015, DPR assumed responsibility for snow clearing on the County’s major multi-use commuter trails. This responsibility extends to almost 10 miles of high-volume, multi-use trails during the snow season and include the following: 5.2 miles of the Custis Trail from Lynn Street to the W&OD Trail; 1.25 miles of the Bluemont Junction Trail; 2.25 miles of the Four Mile Run Trail; and 0.4 miles of the Route 110 Trail. The County’s goal is to give these multi-use trails the same snow removal priority and response time as primary arterial streets. This snow removal is accomplished by using two specialized vehicles to treat and plow in small spaces and run with three-man crews.
Impact of Reduction: By eliminating the staff and equipment budget related to trail snow clearing, these major multi-use commuter trails will not be cleared of snow during major snow events at the top priority level. Snow removal will only begin after parking lots and other DPR assigned street routes are cleared.
I’m hoping this is just an exercise to study possibilities for and weigh the risks of potential budget cuts because so much work has been done to achieve the 10 miles of trail clearing that we get.

I watched it last night on my ride home on the CCT about 9 p.m. For a half mile stretch of the CCT, head height is only a couple feet above above the Towpath surface. Major stretches looked like a dirty ice rink.

ParticipantI wonder what it would take to get a volunteer plow operator program started? I’ll bet we could rent a couple quads.
You guys with shovels are hero level 10. It pains me to think that the work you can do with a shovel in 2 hours. You could clear several miles with a little tractor or quad in the same amount of time.

Huzzah (sort of)!!!!
NPS GWMP did snow removal from Columbia Island Marina parking lot to the north side of the Humpback Bridge. Clearing of the MVT seemed to continue north towards the Mem Bridge as well. Unclear how far it went.
The “sort of” is that the clearing stopped at the north side of the Humpback and the bridge and the trail up to the 14th St Bridge was untouched.
DDOT seems to have forgotten the bike/ped lane on the bridge.
NPS was hit and miss around the Jefferson. Ramp down from 14th St Bridge untouched, sidewalk cleared till the bridge on Ohio Dr connecting the Tidal Basin to the Washington Channel. If you don’t want to put a tractor on the sidewalk, get a snowblower.
I’m definitely sending some communications to the National Park Service thanking them for the MVT clearing. That and the snow clearing by Bobco & Co at LBJ made a huge improvement in getting to work after a snowstorm.

ParticipantBobco’s note above suggests the Bluemont Junction Trail is a priority for trail-clearing.
Is that the case? Has anyone ridden on Bluemont recently? Thanks!! w&w
