ParticipantCounting down to “So the police came upon me blowtorching a bike lock…. anyone got a bail bondsman?”… seriously that stinks. I’d bring some kind of proof of ownership though just in case someone does notice you working on it.

ParticipantLOL
I already thought of that. I have my receipt. Performance Bikes in Falls Church

ParticipantPerhaps call the lock manufacturer to see if they have any bright ideas? I don’t know if a locksmith could fix the problem. Not so sure I’d want a blowtorch that close to my bike.

ParticipantIf you have a buddy in the police force, find last person they temporarily locked up for stealing bikes and offer to pay the guy $20 to break into your lock. Considering how many bikes are stolen, I’m sure one of them knows the solution.

ParticipantI actually called Kryptonite and they said if I send them the lock and a bill they will reimburse me and send me a new lock. Not sure how long they’ll take to send me a lock though, I ride my bike daily so I am going to buy me one today

ParticipantOddly enough, I know of a bike that’s been locked up for a week now to a street pole where the owner simply let the cable lock drape around the saddle. This means that one can steal it without having to do anything to the lock except flip it off the saddle (out of curiosity I tried just that). I’m amazed every time I see the bike still sitting there (and it looks like a new bike). If I could think of a way to lock it up safely for the owner I would. Must be a newbie.
And no, I’m not going to say where this bike is located but it is in a highly trafficked area.

Maybe it’s a social experiment to see how long the bike will be there? Very interesting though…

Sounds like a bait bike – cops place it to arrest a bike theif.

I have a standard size Kryptonite Kryptolock. Combination, not key. I locked my bike to the bike rack this morning and I noticed that when I tried to close the lock it was a bit stiff. I then hit it hard with my hand to close it then I noticed that one of the combination wheels was stuck (The wheels with the numbers on them) I also noticed that the locking mechanism appeared to not be fully engaged, so I banged the lock again to get it to close completely without binding and when I did so the wheel with the number on it would move again. Since I had trouble getting it to close I figured I’d open the lock again to make sure it was working properly and lo and behold that b*tch wouldn’t open. I can enter my combination, but the button to release the lock will not move one bit.Has anyon ran into this before? My next u lock will be a key lock.
P.S. I left my shower flip flops at home today too. Great lol…
I’ve oiled my lock before with great success. However, a different lock froze up on me, and I jammed the key in it trying to get it out. Fortunately it wasn’t locking the bike at the time, but I should’ve oiled it in retrospect.

ParticipantAn alternative to a blowtorch would be an angle grinder or hydraulic jack.

ParticipantTake a video of whatever you end up doing to break the lock!

That rminds of a show that comes on ABC called What Would You Do? The premise is that they put people unknowingly in situations and see people’s reaction. In one episode they had a young black kid trying to steal a bike and everyone that walked by called the cops or tried to stop him. Then when they had a white kid out there doing the same thing nobody said a word. One passerby even tried to help him. LMAO.

Yeah except this bike has been there day and night so they would have to do a lot of filming to get something interesting. Bike bait did come to mind though since the type of bike and location is rather odd (don’t want to say much more).

I wanted to make a video but I forgot. Here’s a pic. Only took us about 1 minute to cut through it
And I’m mailing it back to Kryptonite TODAY to get another one. And get reimbursed lol

ParticipantSee if they can send you one that won’t melt.

ParticipantDid you try WD40 to loosen it up?
EDIT: I see you already torched it, so I guess not.
