ParticipantLast night I unexpectedly broke free from chores and caretaking duties, and I was able to secure a last-minute ticket to see the MAMIL film. Hooray! Unfortunately I needed to speed off as soon as it ended, so I missed any post-movie discussions. What did people think?
Some initial reactions…
–There were several deliciously funny segments near the beginning…some of which were included in the trailer. The whole concept of MAMIL offers rich fodder for humor.
–Some of the wives’ reactions were telling. You could see they were not thrilled with their husband’s time commitments/sense of entitlement and profligacy, and they wished that they too could escape from chores and childcare. “His” dream was not “their” dream.
–I thought it was interesting how much money these guys were spending on their bikes and gear, sometimes in secrecy like by paying half in cash and half by credit card.
–Certain men were keenly interested in every detail of their kits. Really? I can’t imagine that most guys would give a darn.
–I wish they had included more interviews with advertising agents, sports equipment vendors, psychologists and anthropologists. The personal vignettes were interesting enough but could have used some editing.
–Parts of the commentary by the gay men were quite amusing, like when one said he couldn’t understand why more gay men wouldn’t ride simply given the [revealing/sexy] clothing involved.
–There was some wonderful footage from a Latino bike-riding group in Los Angeles, started by and in support of a morbidly obese man who was told by doctors that he would likely die soon given his excess weight. It was really heartwarming seeing him out there riding. I wanted to cheer him on from my seat!
–There were also several other moving stories of riders who were overcoming very difficult situations. Their bicycles and the camaraderie of fellow riders made a huge difference in their physical and mental well-being. Amen!
–The movie could be re-written from a female perspective. But it was very interesting to have a window into the guy side of things, and I’m really happy I got to see it!

– Given the trailer we saw back in the fall, I was hoping it would be more snarky or deprecating to evoke more laughs
– I thought it went on a bit too long overall
– Was similarly inspired by the LA riding group
– I was enormously impressed that all of these things were happening at exactly the same time! (“Meanwhile on the Col de Tourmelet…” “Back in Perth, Australia, the MAMIL team is gathering at the start….”)
– I agree that the spouse/partner contributions were insightful, as well as slightly cringe-worthy. It seemed that the MAMILs were not even completely aware of their partners’ perspectives. A little sad that it takes a cameraman and director to get them to talk.
– The beer and tater tots at Crafthouse were really goodFebruary 23, 2018 at 2:55 pm #1084427Judd

Unfortunately Lola stayed behind in Rio de Janeiro, but I did manage to get Colin Steele down from Boston, and Edwin Martinez out of his cave, for a mini-reunion of our original Vasa inspired B4 riding club: Blokes, Broads, Bikes & Brews!
