Honestly, I feel like this place has way too many forums as it is. Whenever I’m trying to find a thread I know I looked at recently it takes forever to click through them all trying to guess where it is.

I never browse the particular forums – I just hit the “new posts” link and see if anything looks interesting.

The main index could be cleaned up or formatted. Maybe have a separate header grouping different subjects together, while keeping all the forums. For example:

    GENERAL DISCUSSION

    BIKE COMMUTING
    Commuters
    Capital Bikeshare
    Capital Bikeshare Software Developers

    GEAR
    Bikes & Equipment
    Maintenance
    Classifieds

    RIDES
    Events
    Group Rides
    Where to Ride?
    Family Biking
    Freezing Saddles
    Bike to Work Day

    PICTURES & VIDEOS

    ADVISORY COMMITTEES
    Arlington Bicycle Advisory Committee
Alexandria Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee
    Fairfax Advocates for Better Bicycling

If the index had these headers or groupings, all of the forums would still be visible on the main page, but they could be much easier to locate. General Discussion could remain at the top, and stay as an individual forum. Nothing would change except the arrangement on the index page (and moving Maintenance to the index). Instead of all the individual forum titles, someone can just scan the index and see a few general topics, followed by a few forums beneath each topic.

I edited the previous post to provide a sample of what a clean forum index might look like.

I don’t like subforums (like Maintenance) that you can’t see unless you go into the parent forum. Unless you notice that the “Maintenance” icon is darker blue, you wouldn’t know that there are new posts there.
