Half the reason I bike is to burn off extra calories from delicious beer (I like both kinds – IPAs and Imperial IPAs). Maybe if Dr. Misner drank more, he wouldn’t be such a grumpypants.

I don’t take advice from anyone that looks like a Scooby Doo villain.

And I would have had all the beers, too, if it hadn’t been for you meddling nutritionists!

You’re only in trouble when you push 21+ drinks a week. Otherwise, the the 1-2 a night average is helping to save life. Someone should point this guy in that study’s direction. I like to pretend they average out consumption so one bad night can be distributed across the whole week.

This guy makes me afraid to even go outside!

Haha, I wouldn’t worry too much about this article. There’s no links or references to any studies that support his claims, and all the references are for books that give “advice” on nutrition like “buying my book will lead to better nutrition for you (albeit a smaller wallet)!” (Note: I’m not saying everything he claims is wrong, but I don’t think this article is a good source of helpful information.)

My favorite line (with emphasis given): “A review of how human physiology responds to intake of a man-made-altered-carbohydrate such as alcohol in even the smallest amounts does not support toleration by this or any society, for any reason.” That’s right, humans altered alcohol with the natural process of fermentation; also, alcohol is evil ;)

Fun fact…this guy was a member of the Anti-Saloon League back in Aught Seven.

How about we do some science?

For one month I volunteer to drink beer or wine each night. We will get Tim Kelley or Dirt to abstain. We will test our performance at Hains Point with a couple of laps. That will tell us if alcohol affects performance.

“The one beer you are not concerned about drinking contains Aspergillus Oryzae, a fungus which is suspected to be an active carcinogen. Other additives such as 4 types of preservative sulphites, nitrosamines, FD&C Blue No.1, Red No.40, Yellow No. 5, Propylene Glycol Alginate, and Calcium Disodium EDTA”

What beer is this guy referring to? I brew beer at home and the ingredients are very simple, and there are no additives like food coloring.

He says that beer can cause “kidney damage, blood thinning, bronchial spasms, nasal congestion, headaches, diarrhea, fainting, and gastric distress”, but I’ve had some of those symptoms after certain bike rides too. This “article” is also horribly written and an abuse of the English language.

I already generally abstain. Mostly because I can tell a difference in performance the next day if I had alcohol the night before. The turning point for me was going out for a group ride after a night of 10 beers or so and seeing a dramatic dip in performance. After that it was about maintaining weight and I’d prefer to eat my calories than to drink them. So now I’m a cheap date!

Oh and here’s the DC Rainmaker post on this topic: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2008/09/wine-vs-workouts-effects-of-alcohol.html (Have I really been reading his blog for more than 5 years?!?)

Not exactly a controlled experiment. A sample of 2 workouts? C’mon. (Says the girl whose team’s title sponsor is Dogfish Head ;-)
