Check out Bike and Roll: http://bikeandroll.com/washingtondc/dcbikerentals.html

The other option is Capital Bikeshare, but that’s generally a better option for commuting rather than recreational rides: http://www.capitalbikeshare.com

If you are in the Arlington area, the Revolution Cycles City Hub also rents bikes: http://revolutioncycles.com/about/city-hub-central-pg602.htm

Whatcha looking for in terms of frame size and bicycle type? You never know who might have an excessively large fleet that they might want to make money on.

Big Wheel Bikes seems to be a good choice. They have a store in Bethesda right next to the Capital Crescent Trail. According to their website, all of the Big Wheel Bikes locations have bike rentals available.

I’ve never shopped there so I can’t provide a personal review. But the location is certainly convenient for you.

you may want to investigate bikes to borrow.
i have not used them, but read a review of someone that was positive.

Stay away from the Arlington Big Wheel Bikes location. They’ve done the bait & switch on a friend trying to rent from them, before.

I like the Bikes to Borrow concept. Anyone had any experience with that?

I think its a 26″ frame, I like straight handlebars, not too fussy about the exact type of bike, as long as I can use it to explore some of the trails (they are paved or cinder?) –yes, I too had thought maybe a private person might be able to help me–Samantha

A 26″ frame is fairly large, are you well over six feet tall, or maybe you meant 26″ wheels? I’m 5’7″ and ride a 17″ or 19″ frame on a mountain or hybrid bike.

On the trail surfaces, almost all are paved. The CCT going east out of Bethesda towards Silver Spring is crushed stone. The C&O towpath is packed dirt with some gravel.
